“Rail Parcel App – Door-to-Door Service”: Book Rail Parcels from the Comfort of Your Home

  • Home pickup, rail transport, and doorstep delivery – featuring online booking, digital payments, and real-time tracking.

As part of an initiative to make Indian Railways’ parcel service simpler, more convenient, and customer-centric, the “Rail Parcel App – Door-to-Door Service” is being developed. The app will be accessible via mobile (Android and iOS) as well as through a dedicated website. To ensure smooth operations and facilitate a nationwide rollout, the service is being launched initially across 8 major cities.

With this app, customers no longer need to visit a railway parcel office in person or handle manual paperwork. Logistics service providers partnered with the Railways will collect the parcel from the customer’s home or place of business and transport it to the railway station (“first mile”). The Railways will then transport the parcel by train to the destination station (“middle mile”), from where a logistics provider will deliver it to the recipient’s address (“last mile”). Thus, the entire door-to-door service will be available through a single app.

In its initial phase, the app will be launched in 8 major cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Pune. There are plans to expand the service across the entire country in a phased manner.

  • Key Features of the Rail Parcel App:
  • Online Booking: Customers can register using their mobile number, enter parcel details along with the origin and destination stations, and select their preferred delivery partner.
  • Home Pickup and Doorstep Delivery: Both pickup (“first mile”) and delivery (“last mile”) services are optional. Customers will also be able to view available time slots for pickup directly within the app. Additional services, such as packing and storage, can also be availed as optional add-ons.
  • Paperless Process: Booking details entered on the app will serve as a digital forwarding note. A physical parcel waybill is not required for the rail transit portion; a digital receipt and an OTP will suffice.
  • Unified Payment: Rail freight, pickup-delivery charges, and other service fees can be paid in a single transaction via digital modes such as UPI, debit/credit cards, or net banking.
  • Real-time Tracking: Each parcel will be assigned a unique 10-digit tracking number. Automated notifications will be sent via the app and to the registered mobile number when the parcel is loaded, when the train reaches the destination, and when the parcel is ready for delivery.
  • Secure Delivery: Parcel delivery will be completed through OTP-based verification.
  • Insurance Option: For the rail transit portion, an option to declare the value of the parcel or opt for insurance will be available, in accordance with railway regulations.
  • Key Points Regarding Booking and Cancellation
  • Parcels can be booked from a maximum of 15 days up to a minimum of 1 day prior to the scheduled departure of the train, subject to space availability.
  • If a booking is cancelled before pickup, a refund will be issued as per the applicable rules. Refunds for pickup-delivery charges will be governed by the respective logistics service provider’s refund policy, which will be communicated at the time of booking.
  • If the customer has not opted for ‘last-mile delivery,’ the parcel must be collected from the destination station within the stipulated free-storage period.
  • Expectations from Customers

Customers are requested to pack their parcels securely—using sturdy boxes, trunks, baskets, or sacks—and to provide an accurate declaration regarding the contents, value, and nature of the items being shipped. The booking of flammable, explosive, hazardous, or legally prohibited items is not permitted.

  • Opportunities for Logistics Service Providers

Logistics and delivery companies can join this app through the virtual aggregation platform available on the FBD (Freight Business Development) portal, subject to specified terms and conditions. There will be no restrictions on the number of service providers that can join, nor on the specific locations where they may operate. This will provide customers with more choices and create new opportunities for local enterprises within the logistics sector.

  • Benefits of this Initiative
  • Saves time and effort for customers: There will be no need to travel to the station or wait in queues to send parcels.
  • Benefits for small traders, farmers, and e-commerce sellers: With the combination of affordable rail transport and door-to-door service, products from small traders and artisans can easily reach distant markets.
  • Transparency: Detailed information on charges, digital receipts, and end-to-end tracking will ensure greater transparency in the service.
  • Environmentally friendly transport: Transporting goods by rail is more energy-efficient compared to road transport, leading to a reduction in carbon emissions.
  • Growth in the rail parcel business: Through collaboration with private logistics partners, rail parcel services will become accessible to a wider range of customers.
