- First Batch Commences with 90 Students
Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee International Institute of Information
Technology, Naya Raipur (IIIT-NR), has launched a Minor Programme in
Business Informatics for its B.Tech. students, in line with the objectives of the
National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 to promote multidisciplinary education
and internationalization. The inaugural batch of the programme has enrolled 90
students. On the occasion, the Director of the Institute, Prof. (Dr.) Om Prakash
Vyas, delivered the inaugural lecture on the theme “Business Informatics:
Bridging Business, Technology and AI – From Germany to India.”
In his address, Prof. Vyas explained that the concept of Business Informatics
(Wirtschaftsinformatik) originated in Germany and is now offered in nearly
30–40 countries under various titles such as Business Informatics, Business
Information Systems, Information Systems, and Business Information
Technology. The discipline has become well established and is rapidly gaining
popularity in countries including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the
Netherlands, France, Ireland, Sweden, Finland, Poland, South Africa, Australia,
Malaysia, Canada, the United States, and India.
He further stated that, recognizing the growing importance of this discipline in
India, the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad introduced the
country’s first B.Tech. programme in IT–Business Informatics in 2019. Today,
it has emerged as one of the institute’s most sought-after and industry-oriented
academic programmes and serves as an inspiration for several other technical
institutions across the country.
Prof. Vyas said that industries and businesses are undergoing an unprecedented
digital transformation. FinTech, digital payments, e-commerce, data-driven
decision-making systems, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have fundamentally
transformed the way businesses operate. In this evolving landscape, the
Business Informatics Minor Programme introduced by IIIT Naya Raipur will
provide students with interdisciplinary knowledge in emerging areas such as
Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Business Process Management, Process
Mining, Business Analytics, and Digital Transformation. The programme is
designed to equip students with both strong technical competencies and a sound
understanding of business processes, enabling them to meet the evolving
demands of industry, startups, the financial sector, and digital governance.
He also highlighted that IIIT Naya Raipur has taken significant initiatives to
strengthen collaboration with industry and leading international universities in
the field of Business Informatics. The Institute has established collaborations
with Celonis, Germany, in the areas of Process Mining and Process Intelligence,
and with SmartME, Italy, for technological cooperation. In addition, IIIT Naya
Raipur is actively pursuing joint research, student and faculty exchange
programmes, and broader academic collaborations with the University of
Vienna, Austria, and other leading international institutions.
Prof. Vyas emphasized that the National Education Policy envisions not merely
producing technical specialists but nurturing T-shaped professionals who
possess interdisciplinary expertise and are capable of solving complex industrial
and governance challenges through the integration of business, technology, and
Artificial Intelligence. He expressed confidence that the newly launched Minor
Programme in Business Informatics will provide students with a global
perspective, industry-relevant skills, and international exposure, while
establishing IIIT Naya Raipur as one of the country’s leading centres for
education, research, and innovation in the field of Business Informatics.
