- Rail project underway for coal supply
- Will reduce road traffic pressure; environment and local development to benefit
Work is in progress on a rail project aimed at streamlining coal supply to a coal-based power plant located in the Chhotebhandar area of Pusaur tehsil in Raigarh district. The plant is currently generating 600 MW of electricity, and construction is underway for an additional capacity of 2 x 800 MW. In view of ensuring a steady fuel supply for power generation, this rail corridor is being developed.
The proposed rail line starts from Kirodimal and passes through Muraleepali, Uchchbhitti, Kashichua, Gejhmuda, Banhar, Baghanpur, Jampali, Usraot, Balmagonda, Kurmapali, Gorra, Raitarai, Bulaki, Basanpali, Ruchida, Shankarpali, Pusalda, Kotmara, and Badebhandar, ultimately reaching the plant site. Construction activities across these villages are underway at various stages.
- Status of Land Acquisition
Land acquisition for the project has been completed across 20 villages, following which construction work commenced and is now progressing towards completion. The entire land acquisition process was carried out by the government as per prescribed norms and at notified compensation rates. Landowners in 18 villages accepted the compensation as per due process, enabling the project to move forward.
In the remaining two villages, some landowners demanded compensation higher than the निर्धारित rates, leading to disruptions in the work. At the administrative level, the situation was handled in accordance with legal procedures. Considering the obstruction to a government project, necessary action was taken by the administration, after which the project work was resumed.
- Transport and Environmental Aspects
At present, coal is transported via road, resulting in increased movement of heavy vehicles. Once rail transport begins, the pressure on roads will decrease, dust pollution will be reduced, and risks associated with road safety will diminish. At the local level, this is being viewed as a long-term benefit.
- Overall Perspective
The rail project is being seen as a critical infrastructure requirement linked to the region’s energy supply system. It is expected to ensure continuity in power generation, improve transportation efficiency, and accelerate local development activities. The project is proceeding in accordance with administrative processes and legal provisions.
