Raut Naacha, a famous folk dance of Chhattisgarh, is traditionally performed during Govardhan Puja in the Diwali season. Deeply rooted in the region’s cultural ethos, the dance is predominantly showcased by the Yadav community (herders/cowherds) and is regarded as an act of devotion to Lord Krishna and the sacred cows (Gau-dhan).
This tradition dates back centuries and is closely associated with the stories of Govardhan Puja, where cowherd boys would dance in reverence of Krishna’s divine plays. The dancers wear colourful costumes, head turbans (pagdi), and carry sticks in hand. Their garments are intricately adorned with cowries, bells, and other decorative elements, adding charm and symbolism to the performance.
The dance is accompanied by traditional musical instruments such as the dhol, mandar, and nagada. As the beats rise, the dancers move in synchronized patterns, their movements creating a powerful visual rhythm that is both devotional and communal.
Beyond its religious significance, Raut Naacha is a celebration of social unity, the dignity of labour, the importance of animal husbandry, and the pride in local heritage. The songs sung during the dance — known as Raut Geet — are lyrical tributes to themes of devotion, bravery, love, and the divine leelas of Lord Krishna.
The Hareli celebrations at the CM residence beautifully encapsulated these values, offering a heartfelt tribute to Chhattisgarh’s living traditions.
