- Observers should ensure error-free and timely action: State Election Commissioner Ajay Singh
The Chhattisgarh State Election Commission is accelerating the preparations for the upcoming urban body and three-tier Panchayat elections in May-June 2026. In this sequence, a briefing of electoral roll observers was held today, which was chaired by State Election Commissioner Mr. Ajay Singh. State Election Commissioner Mr. Ajay Singh has given clear instructions to the officials that the voter list revision work should be ensured in an error-free, transparent and timely manner. He said that the name of any eligible citizen should not be left out from the voter list and all claims and objections should be examined seriously and resolved within the stipulated time limit. He laid special emphasis on intensive monitoring and effective supervision of the revision work.
At the meeting, the Commission clarified that a comprehensive revision of the voter list is being undertaken as part of the election process. The eligibility date for this has been set as April 1, 2026. Only citizens who have attained the age of 18 by this date and are included in the Assembly voter lists of the Election Commission of India will be eligible to vote in local elections.
The preliminary publication of the electoral roll will be done on April 13, 2026. After this, claims and objections will be received until April 20, 2026, and they will be resolved by April 27, 2026. The final voter list will be published on May 5, 2026.
The Commission informed that applications for addition, modification and deletion of names in the voters list will be received through prescribed forms.
Information about vacant positions was also shared at the meeting. General elections are proposed for four chairperson positions and 60 councilor positions in urban bodies, and by-elections for four chairperson positions and 17 councilor positions. Meanwhile, under the three-tier Panchayat elections, 10 District Panchayat member positions, 82 Sarpanch positions, and 1,110 Panch positions are vacant, for which elections will be held.
On this occasion, the Secretary of the Commission, Mrs. Shikha Rajput Tiwari also directed the officers to discharge their duties with full seriousness and responsibility and ensure that the voter list revision work is completed with high quality within the stipulated time frame.
