- The epic play ‘Samrat Vikramaditya’ was staged in the holy land of Varanasi.
The grand staging and powerful presentation of the epic play “Samrat Vikramaditya” took the audience on a journey back thousands of years to a golden age. The epic begins with Emperor Vikramaditya’s vow to liberate his motherland from the clutches of foreign invaders. The actors’ lively performances brought to life the era when a great hero emerged to protect his people from the terror of the Shakas. The vast and grand sets, towering forts, and scenes depicting the royal splendor of that era captivated the audience. The lighting and musical accompaniment made each scene so impressive that while the battle scenes vividly depicted heroism, the emperor’s justice filled the audience with a sense of pride.

The greatest feature of the Mahanritya was its realistic depiction. The use of majestic elephants, galloping horses, and caravans of camels lent unprecedented grandeur to the battle scenes and royal splendor. The trumpeting of elephants and the clatter of horses’ hooves created a veritable battlefield on stage, enthralling the audience. Over 400 performers, using modern light and sound technology, impressively presented the emperor’s sense of justice, indomitable valor, and the establishment of the Vikram Samvat. The towering fort and palace sets on stage brought history to life.
The epic drama also prominently showcased the untouched aspects of Emperor Vikramaditya’s personality, which transformed him from an ordinary king to the “Chakravarti Samrat.” The scene when the emperor disguised himself in the darkness of the night to inquire about the well-being of his subjects was particularly heart-touching. The dialogues, which were woven through dialogues in simple and literary language, conveyed the relevance of the “Vikram Samvat” established by him and the significance of Indian chronology. The actors’ dialogues possessed a vigor and clarity that brought history to life on stage. The episodes of the emperor’s justice and “Singhasan Battisi” conveyed the message that leadership is not merely about the enjoyment of power, but about self-sacrifice and self-surrender at the altar of justice.
On the first evening of the grand three-day grand drama, the public and tourists thronged in such numbers that the venue seemed small. As the drama reached its climax, the sky resounded with chants of “Jai Mahakaal” and “Samrat Vikramaditya.” This grand drama proved to be not just a performance, but a powerful medium for returning to our roots. In the final scene, when the emperor was crowned and flowers showered, every citizen’s head was held high with pride.

Even after the program concluded, the audience remained captivated by the magical atmosphere. The successful staging of the mega-drama proved that history, presented in the right perspective and with grandeur, still inspires pride in the public. This mega-drama will prove to be a cultural milestone in the times to come.
