- Chhattisgarh is developing a child-friendly learning environment, fostering friendship and confidence in schools.
In Chhattisgarh, the “Bal Maitri ( Buddy Buddy )” program has emerged as a significant initiative for the holistic development of children and a comfortable learning environment
. Launched as a joint effort by the Women and Child Development Department and the School Education Department, this initiative is proving to be a commendable step toward simplifying and smoothing the transition of children from Anganwadi to primary school.

The first six years of life are considered crucial for children’s mental and personality development. Children receive early education through playful play in Anganwadi centers, but when they first enter the formal school environment, they often feel hesitant and shy. To address this challenge and introduce children to the school environment early, the “Bal Maitri ( Buddy Buddy )” program has been launched. Under this program, Anganwadi children aged 4 to 6 are taken on monthly trips to the nearby primary school. During these trips, children are introduced to the school campus, teachers, and students, and through games, songs, painting, and group activities, friendships and self-confidence are developed. This fosters positive feelings toward school in children, and they are preparing to enter school without fear or hesitation.
As part of the program, Anganwadi children were taken on a statewide school tour on March 20th. Schools across the state experienced an enthusiastic atmosphere during this visit. Young children were warmly welcomed to their schools, and Anganwadi workers, teachers, and students organized child-friendly activities. Children made new friends and embraced the school with a sense of belonging. This initiative was launched in accordance with the directives issued by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Chief Secretaries’ Conference, which emphasized the need for better coordination between Anganwadis and schools. The Chhattisgarh government effectively implemented these directives, issuing joint guidelines from the secretaries of both departments and implementing the program statewide.

The “Bal Maitri ( Buddy Buddy )” program aims to ensure the best interests of children, create a positive and inclusive environment in schools, and strengthen early childhood education. This initiative is giving new direction to children’s emotional, social, and academic development. This innovative initiative, launched in Chhattisgarh, is not only making school comfortable and enjoyable for children, but is also emerging as an exemplary model in the field of child education and development. In the future, this program will play a vital role in strengthening children’s regular attendance, learning ability, and self-confidence.
