
The Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Phase B construction of Indian Institute of Technology Bhilai in a virtual ceremony held on 27 September 2025. In this ceremony the Hon’ble Prime Minister inaugurated Phase B of seven other IITs, namely IIT Patna, IIT Indore, IIT Jodhpur, IIT Tirupati, IIT Palakkad, IIT Dharwad, and IIT Jammu.

The live telecast of the ceremony was organized in the Nalanda Lecture Hall, IIT Bhilai campus. The ceremony was attended by Shri Guru Khushwant Saheb, Technical Education Minister, CG and Shri Domanlal Korsewada, MLA Ahirwara.
With the laying of the foundation stone for Phase B construction, IIT Bhilai moves on to the next phase of infrastructure development. The Government of India approved ₹2,257.55 Cr on 29 May 2025 for Phase B out of which 1092 crores is for campus construction. With this campus built up area will be expanded to an additional 1,51,343 sqm. This will also pave the way for the addition of new engineering and science departments, state-of-the-art laboratories, ICT enabled lecture halls and instrumentation and prototype facilities. The building and facilities in the scope of Phase B also include hostels, mess halls, indoor sports complex, open air theatre, canteen, cricket, football and hockey grounds, tennis courts, residential buildings, and expansion of health centre and shopping complex . The number of students will also increase from 1500 to 3000. One of the key developments of Phase B will be the establishment of a Research Park of 96 crore on the campus which will be the first in the state of Chhattisgarh. The research park is aimed to significantly leverage academia industry collaboration and create an eco-system for state-of-the-art technology development. The project is expected to be completed by October 2028.
Established in 2016, IIT Bhilai was sanctioned Rs 1090.17 Cr by the Government of India for Phase A construction. Under this phase, the institute’s campus was established in Kutelabhata, Durg district, with a built-up area of 1,34,450 sq m.


IIT Bhilai developed a smart, student-centric campus designed for academic rigor, personal growth, and a sustainable lifestyle. The institute was dedicated to the nation by the Hon’ble Prime Minister on 20 February 2024. IIT Bhilai campus integrates eco-friendly design with all modern amenities like Smart Building Systems, fully Wi-Fi enabled campus. The campus has been designed with a vision to inspire future generations to appreciate the joy of living together with nature, to motivate young graduates to work towards advancement in technology along with environmental sustainability. Considering the environment’s sensitivity, the master plan of IIT Bhilai is designed with care for existing natural resources by retaining most of the trees and water bodies.
The master plan of IIT Bhilai has received the highest GRIHA award with a five-star rating in the Large Development (LD) section, along with several exemplary performance awards. IIT Bhilai has won several other awards, such as Passive Architecture Design and Energy Management under the GRIHA LD rating and the NSCI Safety Awards 2021. Inspired by Gond tribal art, access corridors feature culturally rooted installations that celebrate Chhattisgarh’s heritage.


At present, IIT Bhilai is spearheading over 300 national and international projects worth about Rs 185 crores and 30 patents filed. IIT Bhilai also hosts a Section 8 company, the IIT Bhilai Innovation and Technology Foundation (IBITF), established under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NMICPS) of the Department of Science and Technology. In recognition of its outstanding work, IBITF has recently been designated as a Category A Hub under the title: “Technologies for the Financial Sector (FinTech) – Empowering Marginalized Communities through Technology-Driven Innovation.” One of the most remarkable initiatives of IIT Bhilai is the Vidya Samiksha Kendra, Chhattisgarh, a centralized, real-time digital monitoring system for schools, teachers, students and distribution system across the state. By standardizing and authenticating students and textbook data, the platform identified and eliminated 10 lakh non-existent student records, resulting in savings of 60 lakh textbooks worth Rs.40 crores. Furthermore, in its commitment to the upliftment of tribal communities through deep-tech solutions, a total of 54 tribal development projects have been undertaken by IIT Bhilai across the country, with a total outlay of Rs. 19 crore.
Currently 1525 students are enrolled at IIT Bhilai under Btech, MTech, MSc, and PhD programmes. With the completion of Phase B development, the institute will expand its scope and role not only in its teaching and research development verticals, but also as a key player in collaborative projects and bolster the technologically aided development of the state.
