The name of Mithila Nayak Didi—from Gram Panchayat Khorigaon in the Barmkela block of Sarangarh-Bilaigarh district—has now been added to the list of rural women who have moved beyond dependence on traditional agriculture to embrace the path of self-reliance. Through her hard work, acumen, and the effective implementation of government schemes, Mithila Didi has completely transformed her family’s economic situation.
- From Limited Income to Financial Strength
Mithila Nayak Didi, from Gram Panchayat Khorigaon in Barmkela block, stands as an inspiring example of the rising wave of self-reliance among women; for her, mushroom cultivation has proven to be a boon. Initially, the family relied solely on traditional farming to meet financial needs, making it difficult to manage household expenses. To tackle this challenge, Mithila Didi decided to join the Annapurna Self-Help Group. After joining the group, she received financial assistance through the Sakhi Cluster Organization, Budeli.
- Embarking on the Journey with an Initial Capital of ₹1.5 Lakh
To launch the mushroom production business, she utilized a loan of ₹1.20 lakh from the Sakhi Cluster Organization and ₹30,000 from her personal savings, starting the venture with a total initial investment of ₹1.50 lakh. Although the work was new to her in the beginning, her eagerness to learn and persistent efforts soon transformed mushroom production into a successful livelihood activity. Early on, she faced several challenges, such as temperature control, marketing issues, and a lack of technical knowledge. However, by undergoing training and leveraging mutual cooperation, Mithila Didi turned all these challenges into opportunities.
- Monthly Income of ₹50,000 and an Inspiring Initiative
Driven by superior quality and production, the demand for mushrooms has surged in local markets. Currently, ‘Mithila Didi’ cultivates mushrooms at home and sells them locally, earning an income of approximately ₹50,000 per month. Her success has now become a source of inspiration for other women in the region.

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, the state government is placing special emphasis on strengthening the rural economy and economically empowering women. Thanks to the district administration’s continuous monitoring and grassroots-level guidance, the direct benefits of government schemes are reaching genuine beneficiaries, enabling rural women to create new self-employment opportunities.
