A giant tumor (fibroid) measuring approximately 24.2 x 23.1 x 17 cm and weighing 8 kg, equivalent to the size of a large football, has been removed from the stomach of Champa Yadav, a resident of Jhalama.
Champa Yadav had been suffering from severe abdominal pain, severe swelling, and vomiting for the past month. When she was brought to the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department as an emergency on August 22, 2026, her condition was extremely critical and she was found to be severely anemic (hemoglobin level of only 7.5 g/dL). Furthermore, radiological tests (CT scan and ultrasound) revealed that the massive lump had displaced the uterus and compressed the left ureter, adversely affecting the kidneys and worsening liver parameters.
Given the severity of the situation and the patient’s critical condition, the medical team decided to first stabilize the patient. He was given several units of packed red blood cells (PRBCs) to compensate for the severe blood loss and antibiotics to restore his organ function to the point where he could undergo surgery.
After the patient was fully stabilized, a high-risk surgery (exploratory laparotomy) was performed under general anesthesia on September 1, 2026. The operation posed a significant challenge, as the massive tumor was deeply embedded in the patient’s intestines. To safely manage this critical situation, the General Surgery Unit was called in to assist in the operating theater.
Displaying remarkable surgical skill, a combined team of doctors from the departments of gynecology, general surgery, and anesthesia carefully cut the intricate intestinal connections and safely separated both ureters without causing any damage. Subsequently, the massive tumor, along with the uterus, was removed from the body. This complex operation was a complete success. Following the operation, Champa Yadav was transferred to the recovery room, where she is receiving IV fluids and pain medication. Her condition is now stable and she is recovering.
