Following the directives of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, the district administration is on high alert due to the rising water level of the Mahanadi River and waterlogging in the riparian areas of Janjgir-Champa district. Collector Shri Janmejay Mahobe and Superintendent of Police (SP) Shri Vijay Kumar Pandey visited Shivrinarayan to inspect the barrage, the bridge, and the areas along the Mahanadi. They assessed the river’s water level and flow, as well as safety, relief, and rescue preparedness, instructing officials to maintain constant vigilance and take immediate action as required.
The Collector and SP inspected the Shivrinarayan barrage and bridge, the riparian areas, and the relief camp established at Shri Mahant Laldas College. Arrangements at the relief camp ensure all necessary facilities for affected individuals, including accommodation, food, clean drinking water, lighting, sanitation, and toilet facilities. Officials have been directed to pay special attention to the comfort and safety of the affected citizens.
- Traffic halted on Mahanadi bridge; security measures stepped up
Traffic movement on the Mahanadi bridge has been suspended for safety reasons due to the increased flow of water. The Collector and SP have ordered continuous monitoring of the bridge and surrounding areas and directed that people be prevented from approaching the fast-flowing water. Necessary security arrangements are also being ensured at other vulnerable locations in light of the river’s water level and flow. Health department teams have been deployed in the affected areas, and citizens are undergoing regular health check-ups. In addition to ensuring the availability of essential medicines, necessary health and hygiene measures are being implemented to prevent potential diseases and infections associated with waterlogging.
The Collector and SP have instructed relevant departments—including Revenue, Police, Home Guards, Water Resources, and Health—to work in coordination. Continuous monitoring is being maintained in riverside areas and locations prone to waterlogging. Necessary manpower and resources have been kept on standby to immediately relocate affected individuals to safe locations and initiate relief and rescue operations if required.
- Public announcements in riverside areas; advice to remain alert
In accordance with the instructions of Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, the safety of citizens in affected and vulnerable areas is being accorded top priority. Residents in riverside areas and localities previously affected by waterlogging are being informed via public announcements about potential waterlogging and necessary safety precautions. River water levels, bridges, culverts, and transport routes are being constantly monitored so that immediate action can be taken if the situation changes.
The Collector and SP have appealed to citizens to avoid visiting rivers, bridges, ghats, and areas with strong currents unnecessarily. They have advised people not to risk taking selfies or videos near fast-flowing water and to refrain from entering routes or areas closed by the administration for safety reasons. Citizens are urged to report any emergency situation immediately to the concerned officials to ensure timely relief and rescue operations.
The district administration is continuously monitoring the situation in the areas along the Mahanadi River. Following the directives of Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, all relevant departments are working in coordination, prioritizing the safety, relief, and essential needs of the affected citizens. All necessary arrangements have been ensured at the relief camps. Health Department teams are engaged in conducting health check-ups, while officials and staff from the Police, Revenue, Home Guards, and Water Resources departments remain fully prepared for relief and rescue operations.
Officials and staff from the concerned departments—including Shivrinarayan Municipality President Mr. Rahul Thawait, Janjgir SDM Mr. Subrat Pradhan, Shivrinarayan SDM Ms. Bhavna Sahu, and Executive Engineer Mr. Shashank Singh—were present during the inspection.
