The two-day selection trials for the inaugural season of the Chhattisgarh Hockey League (CHL) concluded today at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Hockey Stadium in Raipur. A total of 373 players had registered for the trials, with 223 participating. Following the two-day selection process and an evaluation of their performance, 130 players have been shortlisted.
Players from various regions of the state participated in the trials, showcasing their skills and determination to secure a spot in the league’s first season. During the selection process, players were evaluated based on their sporting skills, performance, and established criteria.
Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare, Mr. Arun Sao, visited the trial venue for the second consecutive day. He watched the players in action, interacted with them, and encouraged them to further hone their skills. While boosting their morale, he urged them to continue improving their game through consistent practice and hard work.
Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Arun Sao stated, “The successful conclusion of the selection trials for the Chhattisgarh Hockey League marks a significant milestone for the state’s hockey talent. The registration of 373 players and participation from across the state demonstrate that both enthusiasm and talent for hockey exist in the state. Shortlisting 130 players is a key outcome of this process. These players will now have the opportunity to become part of the league’s six teams through the player draft. Our government aims to provide Chhattisgarh’s players with a superior competitive environment, essential experience, and opportunities for advancement.” He extended his best wishes to all the shortlisted players for the upcoming draft and the league.
Ms. Akanksha Shikha Khalkho, Director of the Department of Sports and Youth Welfare, along with Mr. Manish Shrivastava, President of the Chhattisgarh Hockey Association, and Mr. Firoz Ansari, Secretary, were also present on this occasion.
Following the selection trials, the next crucial step towards forming teams for the league’s inaugural season will be the CHL player draft. This draft, scheduled to be held in Raipur on October 8, will feature 130 shortlisted players. From this pool, the six franchise teams will select their respective squads, after which the teams for the league’s first season will be finalized.
