  • Article – Shashiratna Parashar, Deputy Director

Community pond construction works are being taken forward as an important initiative towards water conservation, groundwater enrichment and strengthening the means of rural livelihood in the district. Construction of 34 community ponds with a sanctioned amount of Rs. 172.13 lakh is proving to be an important initiative towards water conservation, groundwater enrichment and strengthening the rural livelihood in the district. These works conducted under VB-G Ramji Yojana are not only increasing the water storage capacity in rural areas but also efforts are being made towards encouraging agriculture and other livelihood activities. Their objective is not only limited to water conservation but also to link the use of available water resources with rural needs and livelihood enhancement.

  • Initiatives to increase water availability through rainwater harvesting

In rural areas, water availability is crucial for agriculture and other activities. Water conservation structures can be especially useful for rain-fed farmers. Rainwater can be collected through community ponds and used to suit local conditions. This will promote proper water resource management and help develop alternative sources of water availability.

The importance of community ponds also lies in the fact that the benefits of a single water structure can be shared among numerous rural families. This collective use system fosters shared responsibility for water resources, allowing the rural community to play an active role in the conservation of natural resources.

  • Various opportunities for agriculture and livelihood will be encouraged

Water stored in community ponds can be used for agriculture and other permitted activities, depending on local conditions, water availability, and technical suitability. This can help farmers better plan their crops, effectively utilize available resources, and promote agriculture-based activities.

Where there is sufficient water availability, suitable conditions, and the necessary technical facilities, the potential for activities such as fisheries can also be assessed. Thus, efforts can be made to strengthen the economic condition of rural families by linking water structures with livelihood opportunities. However, the actual benefits of these possibilities will depend on water availability, the utility of the structure, and relevant departmental provisions.

  • Special focus on building durable assets

To ensure the long-term utility of community ponds, it is essential to adhere to established technical standards, quality standards, and departmental guidelines during construction. Furthermore, attention is paid to regular monitoring, timely completion, and proper post-construction maintenance. Effective use of water structures is possible only when local community participation is ensured in their conservation and operation.

Raising awareness among villagers about water conservation, judicious use of water, and conservation of natural resources is also an important aspect of this initiative. Community participation will strengthen the responsibility for the protection of water structures and ensure the long-term benefits of the created assets.

  • Rural development will get permanent strength

The construction of community ponds under the VB-G Ramji Scheme is an important step towards developing infrastructure and improving the use of natural resources in rural areas. These structures will promote water conservation and support agriculture-based livelihoods. Building assets tailored to local needs, maintaining them appropriately, and using them collectively can contribute to more sustainable rural development.

  • Emphasis on quality and timely completion

In this regard, District Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Mr. Jayant Nahata stated that the construction of community ponds is an important initiative for water conservation and rural livelihood enhancement. Its purpose is to increase rainwater harvesting in rural areas and to optimize water resources according to local needs. Such structures can not only meet current needs but also contribute to the conservation of natural resources for the future.

He stated that emphasis is being placed on ensuring adherence to prescribed technical standards, quality, and departmental guidelines in community pond construction projects. District Panchayats and field staff have been instructed to regularly monitor the work and ensure completion within the stipulated timeframe. Attention will also be paid to the proper maintenance and effective use of the constructed assets, ensuring long-term benefits for villagers.

This initiative to build community ponds offers an opportunity to link water conservation, natural resource enhancement, and rural livelihoods. Through quality construction, public participation, and planned use, these structures can help empower villages to conserve water and provide better livelihood opportunities for rural families.
