- Water conservation, irrigation, fisheries and employment got a new base
A community pond has been constructed under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA) in Majaulipara, Gram Panchayat Navagaon Karra, Kota development block, Bilaspur. The primary objective of this project was to conserve rainwater, increase groundwater levels, expand irrigation facilities, promote fisheries, and provide local employment to villagers. A total of ₹5.11 lakh was approved for this project. The Muktidham area near the village had long felt the need for proper rainwater harvesting.
Most of the rainwater was wasted, leading to water shortages during the summer season, declining groundwater levels, and irrigation problems. In response to these circumstances, the construction of a community pond enabled effective rainwater harvesting. Following the construction of the pond, groundwater recharge in the surrounding areas increased significantly. Water became available for irrigation, giving agricultural activities a new impetus. Additionally, increased water availability led to the introduction of fisheries at the local level, which created a new source of additional income and employment for the villagers.
This initiative also made a significant contribution to environmental conservation. The water stored in the pond helped preserve the surrounding trees, plants, and greenery. Reducing the uncontrolled flow of rainwater also controlled soil erosion and strengthened the ecological balance in the area. This also increased awareness among villagers about water conservation. The construction of the pond, located near the crematorium, also proved extremely useful from a social perspective. Previously, there was insufficient water for essential activities like funerals, but now this pond provides the necessary water. This community asset is also proving useful for other social activities in the village.
Today, this community pond has become a successful model of water conservation and rural development for the village of Navagaon Karra. This initiative has strengthened agricultural production, fisheries, and groundwater conservation, while also providing employment to villagers through MNREGA. This work serves as an excellent example of natural resource conservation, environmental balance, and strengthening rural livelihoods, serving as an inspiration for other villages in the region.
