Clean water reaches every home, changing the face of Kodwa village

  • Jal Jeevan Mission alleviates drinking water crisis, brings new prosperity to the lives of villagers

The Jal Jeevan Mission has brought significant change to the lives of villagers in Kodwa, a dependent village of the Gram Panchayat Budhasagar, under the Chhuikhadan development block of the Khairagarh-Chhuikhadan-Gandai district. This village, with a population of approximately 315 and 51 families, previously had access to potable water, but problems with adequate pressure and regular supply prevented water from reaching many homes, schools, and Anganwadi centers. The situation became even more challenging during the summer.

The village of Kodava is located near a hilly area, where iron was found in some areas of the water. Villagers relied on hand pumps, borewells, ponds, and other water sources. Women and the elderly had to work extra hard to obtain water, disrupting their daily routine.
Recognizing this problem for the villagers, 73 household tap connections were provided in the village under the Jal Jeevan Mission. With the implementation of the scheme, clean drinking water began reaching every household through taps. Today, all families in the village have regular tap water access, and the drinking water crisis has been completely resolved.

To ensure the successful implementation of the scheme, a Village Water and Sanitation Committee and a Water Quality Committee were formed within the Gram Sabha. Committee members were provided information on water conservation, water management, and water quality testing. Jalvahini Didis were also trained in water testing using field testing kits (TQKs) and reporting online. Villagers were also educated on maintaining cleanliness around water sources.

The availability of clean drinking water has reduced waterborne diseases and improved public health in the village. Women are saving time and labor, allowing them to play a more active role in family and other livelihood activities. Children also have access to adequate drinking water in schools and Anganwadis.

Today, Kodwa village has emerged as a shining example of the success of the Jal Jeevan Mission. This village demonstrates how effective implementation of schemes can improve rural life. With clean water, improved health, and increased prosperity, Kodwa has now become an inspiration for other villages in the district.
