Dr. T.V. Somanathan, Cabinet Secretary to the Government of India, held a video conference today from New Delhi with the Chief Secretaries of all states to issue directives regarding comprehensive preparations and arrangements to handle the potential cyclonic storm ‘Arnab’ in the Bay of Bengal. Representing the state of Chhattisgarh from the Mantralaya (Mahanadi Bhawan), Additional Chief Secretary Shri Manoj Kumar Pingua provided a detailed overview of the state’s ongoing preparations to deal with the cyclone.
Providing details on Chhattisgarh’s preparedness, Additional Chief Secretary Shri Pingua stated that relevant departments have been placed on ‘alert mode’ to address potential contingencies. In light of the forecast for heavy rainfall in the South Bastar region on October 28, necessary precautionary measures are being taken. Seven State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams, equipped with essential gear, are on standby. Additionally, Home Guard units and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are prepared to respond to any emergency.

He noted that necessary arrangements—including relief camps, healthcare facilities, food supplies, and transport and communication systems—have been put in place for potentially affected areas. Provisions have also been made to relocate affected individuals to safe locations and operate relief camps, should the need arise. The state government is taking all necessary precautions to prevent loss of life and ensure rapid relief and rescue operations during emergencies.
During the meeting, the Cabinet Secretary emphasized that the goal of achieving ‘zero loss of life’ during the cyclone should be given the highest priority. He urged the states to remain vigilant to prevent incidents such as falling trees, collapsing walls, or individuals inadvertently putting themselves at risk while traveling. He emphasized the need for an effective warning system, the timely relocation of people to safe places as required, and the maintenance of regular communication and coordination between the state and district administrations.
