Department warns taxpayers who do not file GST returns on time

  • Delay in filing returns will attract late fees and interest, and continued negligence will also result in cancellation of registration.

The Commercial Tax Department has issued a warning to registered taxpayers who have not filed GST returns within the stipulated deadline. The department has clarified that timely submission of GST returns is a statutory obligation of every registered taxpayer. Despite this, some businesses are not adhering to the deadline. Following several previous warnings, the department has now urged taxpayers to file pending returns immediately. Assistant Commissioner of State Tax, Ms. Sarita Sirsam, stated that filing returns on time is mandatory under GST rules. Taxpayers who neglect this process may be subject to late fees, interest, and other legal action as per the rules. Continued non-filing of returns may also result in stringent legal action, including cancellation of GST registration.

  • Deadline for filing GST returns

The department has set deadlines for filing GST returns for regular taxpayers. Accordingly, monthly taxpayers with an annual turnover of more than ₹5 crore: GSTR-1 must be filed by the 11th of each month and GSTR-3B by the 20th of each month. Quarterly taxpayers with an annual turnover of up to ₹5 crore: GSTR-1 must be filed by the 13th of the following quarter and GSTR-3B by the 22nd.

The department has requested the taxpayers to submit their returns on time keeping in mind the due dates, so that unnecessary late fees, interest and other legal action can be avoided.

  • Appeal for immediate filing of pending returns

The Commercial Tax Department has appealed to all taxpayers whose GST returns are pending to file them immediately and to strictly adhere to the deadlines in future. According to the department, timely filing of returns increases transparency in the tax system and helps in ensuring tax compliance.
