Gave up the gun, got respect: Kamalu Ram Nureti’s permanent home comes into existence after surrender

When someone leaves the path of violence and returns to the mainstream, not only does one life improve, but society as a whole finds a new direction. The story of Kamalu Ram Nureti, a resident of Kohkameta village panchayat in the Orchha development block of Narayanpur district, is similar. Once entangled in the links of a Naxalite organization, Kamalu Ram made the bold decision to surrender in 2013 and return to the mainstream. Today, he not only lives a respectable life himself, but has also become a source of inspiration for others.

  • The lost ones were shown the way, the government provided support

    After surrendering, Kamalu Ram considered the welfare of society paramount. He not only gave a new direction to his life but also inspired other Naxal-affected youth to abandon the path of violence and surrender. In recognition of his positive change and social contribution, he was directly extended the benefits of the state government’s rehabilitation schemes, making his long-cherished dream of owning a permanent home a reality.

  • Dream home built with coordinated plans

    The district administration made special efforts to fully integrate Kamalu Ram into the mainstream. He was surveyed under the “Surrendered Naxal Victims Scheme” as a special project in 2024-25, after which he was approved for a permanent house at a cost of ₹1.20 lakh under the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana. During the construction of the house, he was also provided with wages of ₹23,490 through MNREGA (VB-G Ram Ji), which provided significant financial support for the construction work. Along with the new home, he was also provided with a toilet under the Swachh Bharat Mission and an electricity connection through the Saubhagya Yojana.

    Mr. Kamalu Ram Nureti said, “Previously, I lived with my family in a rented house, where every day presented new difficulties. Today, having our own permanent home, electricity, and toilet, the entire family is overjoyed. We have found a safe and dignified life.”

    The district administration believes that the rehabilitation programs for surrendered Naxalites are yielding extremely positive results on the ground. Kamalu Ram’s success story is living proof that when government policies and societal support are combined, any life can be transformed. This change is strengthening peace, development, and unwavering trust in Bastar and surrounding Naxal-affected areas.
