- Campaign of the Department of Agriculture to adopt the cultivation of coarse grains and pulses as an alternative to paddy
Considering the prospect of low rainfall in Balaghat district, the agriculture department is encouraging the farmers to cultivate low water ready crops instead of paddy. Under this campaign, the agriculture department is distributing millet and native black parrot seeds to the farmers.
Deputy Director Agriculture Shri Phoolsingh Malviya said that millet seeds were distributed to farmer Channulal Bilsare of Village Salewara of Birsa Development Block on July 18. He said that coarse grain crops like millet and kutki give good yields in less water and are proving to be profitable options for farmers. In this order, indigenous black parrot seeds were distributed to the farmers on July 19 for sowing on the fields. Mr. Malviya said that the indigenous species of black parrot is an excellent pulse crop, which gives good yield with low cost and low maintenance. Along with being delicious, this crop is rich in nutritional properties and is considered to be very beneficial for human health.
He said that native black parrot is in special demand in Balaghat district and its seeds are used as a delicious vegetable. The Agriculture Department is continuously motivating the farmers to adopt this crop, so that the farmers can get better production and income even in low water conditions.
