The box cricket ground built in the Forest Ground is encouraging and disciplining the youth towards sports.

The box cricket ground, built in the Forest Ground under the Mahasamund Block in Mahasamund district, provides special facilities and encourages youth and children to take up the sport. Completed in August 2025, the ground has been opened to both citizens and players.

Previously, the city’s lack of large playgrounds and the increasing traffic congestion on the streets meant children and players couldn’t find a safe and suitable place to play cricket. Built by the Housing Board, the construction agency, in a limited area of 4,842 square feet, the Box Cricket Ground offers an innovative solution. It addresses the space constraints and provides a safe playing environment with modern amenities.

The Box Cricket Ground operates in two shifts, from 6:00 am to 9:00 am and from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Schoolchildren, youth, and working individuals are enjoying the game at their convenience. Played in a short format of 15-20 minutes, this game has provided a great option for fitness and recreation even for those with busy lifestyles. Floodlights at night allow players to practice even after work. Floor mats and strong netting throughout the ground have made the game safer, eliminating the possibility of losing the ball or damaging surrounding property. Even a small number of players can play easily, making it suitable for all age groups. This project, constructed at a cost of approximately ₹25.07 lakh, has strengthened the sports infrastructure in the district and is encouraging and inspiring youth to take up the sport.

NIS cricket coach Mr. Tripesh Kumar Sahu explained that practicing at the Box Cricket Ground saves time and allows players to practice more in less time. This is rapidly improving the children’s technique and preparing them better for competitions.
