The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) aims to provide clean fuel to women from poor and disadvantaged families in the country by providing them with free LPG gas connections. Under this scheme, women heads of poor families (including SC, ST, BPL, and PM Awas Yojana beneficiaries) must be over 18 years of age.
In the rural and inaccessible areas of Narayanpur, a remote forest region of Chhattisgarh, there was a time when cooking meant nothing but wood, smoke from charcoal, and burning eyes. Heading to the forest with the first rays of dawn and carrying bundles of wood on their heads became the destiny of the women here. This labor not only required time and physical exertion, but the smoke-filled kitchen had a serious impact on the lungs of women and children. The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana has completely transformed this difficult lifestyle.
- LPG gas connections provided to 22,018 eligible families in Narayanpur district
Through the effective implementation of the scheme in Narayanpur district, LPG gas connections have been provided to 22,018 eligible families so far. This initiative has not only replaced traditional fuels but also brought a new dawn of self-respect and prosperity to women at the bottom of society.
- Freedom from smoke: Clean kitchens, better health
Before the implementation of the Ujjwala Yojana, cooking was based solely on wood and cow dung cakes. Women faced respiratory problems and eye infections due to prolonged exposure to smoke. After receiving gas stoves, the kitchen environment has become cleaner and smoke-free. The scheme’s primary objective is to protect the health of women and children by reducing household air pollution, a reality evident in every village of Narayanpur.
- Women are empowered by saving time and labor.
Women used to have to walk several kilometers daily to collect firewood in forest areas. Ujjwala gas connections have relieved this daily hardship. Now, the time previously wasted collecting firewood is being used by women to educate and care for their children, engage in livelihood-related activities (such as self-help groups), and actively participate in social and community work. It is noteworthy that under the Ujjwala scheme, beneficiaries receive a deposit-free connection along with necessary equipment. Under the current system, the first refill and stove are also provided free of charge, reducing the financial burden on poor families. The age-old problem of cooking with wet wood during the rainy season has also been eliminated.
