48-year-old woman from Bihar undergoes successful bypass surgery at Ambedkar Hospital

  • The patient had blockages in all three major arteries of the heart. He underwent beating heart coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) after controlling his highly uncontrolled blood sugar.
  • The operation was performed under the Ayushman scheme, and the patient started walking from the second day.
  • This patient had blockages in all three coronary arteries, a condition known as triple vessel disease (TVD), and his heart was only contracting by 40%.
  • Mammary Artery used for bypass using the technique of beating heart bypass surgery
  •  Arterial grafts generally have the longest lifespan.

The Department of Heart, Chest and Vascular Surgery at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital, Raipur, affiliated with Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Medical College, performed successful coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) on a 48-year-old woman from Madhubani district, Bihar. The patient had severe blockages in all three major coronary arteries, medically known as Triple Vessel Disease (TVD). The patient’s heart pumping capacity was approximately 40 percent.

Department Head and Professor Dr. Krishnakant Sahu and his team successfully performed Beating Heart Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG) on the patient. The mammary artery was used for the bypass surgery. Arterial grafts are generally considered to have long-term effectiveness.

  • The patient underwent surgery using a midline sternotomy technique, which involves carefully opening the sternum, the middle bone of the

chest, to gain access to the heart. This is an established and reliable operative technique in coronary bypass surgery and is known as the gold standard technique.

The patient’s recovery after surgery was also good. After regaining consciousness on the day of the operation, he had a light evening snack and began walking around on the second day. He is now completely healthy and is being discharged from the hospital.

  • The patient, who traveled from Madhubani to Darbhanga and then to Raipur,

said that she had experienced chest pain for the first time about a month and a half ago. She sought medical advice at a hospital in Madhubani, but since a heart specialist wasn’t available there, she was given medicines for gas and acidity and sent home. A few days later, when she experienced chest pain again, her family took her to a major hospital in Darbhanga. An angiography there revealed blockages in all three major arteries of the heart, and the doctors advised her to undergo bypass surgery.

The family was initially planning to have the surgery in Patna. Meanwhile, a relative living in Raipur informed them about the heart surgery department at Ambedkar Hospital. The family then took the angiography CD to Ambedkar Hospital and consulted Dr. Krishnakant Sahu.

Dr. Sahu explained that the patient’s bypass surgery was possible here, but since the patient was a resident of Bihar, it was necessary to find out whether the patient could avail of the surgery in Chhattisgarh based on his Bihar Ayushman Card. Upon inquiring from the Ayushman Yojana office, it was confirmed that the patient’s surgery could be performed at Ambedkar Hospital based on his Bihar Ayushman Card. Following this, the patient was admitted and treatment began.

  • Blood sugar was more than 500 mg/dL, controlled first

The biggest challenge in treating the patient was his highly uncontrolled blood sugar. At the time of admission to the hospital, his blood sugar was more than 500 mg/dL. In such a situation, immediate bypass surgery could have been risky. The medical team first controlled the patient’s blood sugar and performed the bypass surgery only after making his condition suitable for surgery.

  • Now, the risk of heart disease is increasing in women even at a younger age.

Dr. Krishnakant Sahu said that generally, the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) is considered lower in women than in men, and this disease usually appears in women at an older age. However, conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, obesity, tobacco use in any form, family history, increasing weight, inactive lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits can increase the risk of heart disease in women even at a younger age.

He said that women should also not ignore chest pain, shortness of breath, extreme fatigue or other heart-related symptoms and should get a medical check-up done on time.

  • The trust of patients from Chhattisgarh and neighboring states has also increased.

The Heart, Chest and Vascular Surgery Department at Ambedkar Hospital offers facilities for open heart surgery, coronary bypass surgery, chest surgery, and various vascular surgeries. The department performs surgeries for complex heart conditions using modern techniques.

According to Dr. Vivek Chaudhary, Dean of Pt. Nehru Medical College, and Dr. Santosh Sonkar, Superintendent of Ambedkar Hospital, “It is a matter of pride for our government medical institution that patients from Chhattisgarh as well as neighboring states, including Bihar, are now turning to Ambedkar Hospital for complex heart and open-heart surgeries. This reflects the growing trust of patients and their families in the hospital’s medical services over time.”
