State Election Commission begins preparations for the general/by-elections of municipalities and three-tier panchayats in 2026

  • Complete all necessary proceedings for the General/By-elections of Local Bodies 2026 within the stipulated time-frame: State Election Commissioner Shri Ajay Singh

An important meeting was held under the chairmanship of Chhattisgarh State Election Commissioner Shri Ajay Singh , IAS (Retd.) at the Commission’s office , Nava Raipur, to discuss preparations for the 2026 general/by-elections to fill vacant posts in municipalities and three-tier panchayats . The meeting discussed election-related preparations , administrative coordination, and timely action in detail.

The meeting was attended by Chhattisgarh Government’s Urban Administration and Development Department Secretary Mr. Basavaraju S. , Director , Urban Administration and Development Mr. Remigius Ekka , Director , Panchayat and Rural Development Department Mrs. Priyanka Rishi Mahobiya, Secretary , Chhattisgarh State Election Commission Mrs. Shikha Rajput Tiwari and other officials.

  • Current status of vacant posts in urban bodies

It was informed in the meeting that currently, under the urban body by-election, a total of 02 posts of Municipal Chairman and 15 posts of Councillors are vacant. Apart from this, in the four newly formed Nagar Panchayats in the state – Nagar Panchayat Ghumka (District Rajnandgaon) , Nagar Panchayat Bamhnidih (District Janjgir – Champa) , Nagar Panchayat Shivnandanpur (District Surajpur) and Nagar Panchayat Palari (District Balod), 04 posts of Chairman and a total of 60 posts of Councillors are vacant , for which elections are necessary.

  • Information about vacant posts in three-tier Panchayats

Similarly, in the three-tier Panchayats, five District Panchayat member posts , 73 Sarpanch posts, and 965 Panch posts are vacant. Thus, general/by-elections remain to be held for a total of 1,043 posts at the Panchayat level.

  • Instructions for delimitation and reservation in newly formed Nagar Panchayats

State Election Commissioner Shri Ajay Singh directed to complete the process of ward delimitation and reservation in the two newly formed Nagar Panchayats – Nagar Panchayat Tamnar (District Raigarh) and Nagar Panchayat Badi Kareli (District Dhamtari) soon and inform the Commission.

  • Revision of electoral rolls

The State Election Commissioner also directed that immediately after completion of SIR ( Special Intensive Revision) proceedings in Chhattisgarh, the updated voter list should be obtained and the voter list for the by-elections of local bodies should be prepared on priority basis so that the pending by-election proceedings can be completed within the time period prescribed by the Commission .
