Cancer, a serious disease, continues to pose a significant challenge to the medical world, affecting patients both physically and financially. In these difficult times, the Ayushman Bharat scheme and Maharani Hospital in Jagdalpur have emerged as a powerful support system for cancer patients. The stories of many patients receiving treatment here demonstrate that improved treatment is now possible despite limited resources.
Anita Mahawar, a resident of Jagdalpur who runs a small grocery store, is battling advanced stage (fourth) cancer. She initially sought treatment in Hyderabad, where surgery and other procedures cost her approximately 20 to 25 lakh rupees. After her financial situation deteriorated, the Ayushman card proved to be a lifeline for her. For the past two years, she has been receiving treatment at Maharani Hospital, where she benefits from free medicines and constant medical supervision. She says the support she receives there has strengthened her mentally, and she is now facing her illness with a positive attitude.
Gauri Mishra, the wife of an auto driver, is also undergoing treatment at the same hospital. Her family, with limited income, couldn’t afford private hospitals, but the government hospital’s accessible and free services have given them the confidence to receive treatment.
Lakshmi Tandia, a nursing matron at the hospital, is also battling ovarian cancer. She underwent treatment outside for nearly two years, which was extremely expensive. She has been undergoing treatment at Maharani Hospital for the past month and a half under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, where she is receiving even expensive medications free of charge.
Patient experiences indicate that the Ayushman Bharat scheme has made access to treatment easier for the poor and middle class. People are now less compelled to migrate to larger cities for treatment of serious illnesses. Maharani Hospital’s robust systems and dedicated medical services are not only providing treatment but also instilling new hope and confidence in patients.
Today Maharani Hospital is emerging as not just a treatment centre but a symbol of a new beginning in life for struggling patients.
