A unique initiative towards malnutrition-free Chhattisgarh: Planting moong saplings will spread the message of nutrition to every household

  • Special campaign under Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao scheme on the call of Women and Child Development Minister Smt. Laxmi Rajwade

To realize Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Dev Sai’s resolve for good governance and a healthy Chhattisgarh, the Women and Child Development Department is continuously innovating to make nutrition promotion a mass movement. In this sequence, on the call of Women and Child Development Minister Smt. Laxmi Rajwade, a public awareness campaign against malnutrition and anemia is being conducted across the state. The “Munga Plantation with Selfie Campaign” organized under the Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao scheme in Bemetara district gave an effective message of nutrition, environmental protection and public participation.

The Bemetara District Administration and the Women and Child Development Department jointly launched the campaign at the Women’s Empowerment Center (Hub), Sector Dadhi-2, and Sector Kanhera. During the campaign, moringa plants were planted in 18 homes of severely malnourished children, pregnant women, and anemic women, and the families were encouraged to care for and regularly use the plants.

Moringa (drumstick) is known as a “superfood.” Its leaves, pods, and flowers are rich in iron, calcium, protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, and numerous micronutrients. According to experts, regular consumption of this plant improves the nutritional status of pregnant women, prevents anemia, and supports the physical and mental development of children. To this end, beneficiaries were provided detailed information about the nutritional and medicinal value of Moringa during the campaign.

The campaign wasn’t limited to tree planting, but rather, through the “With Selfie Campaign,” people were actively involved in this public campaign. This effort was made to develop positive awareness among people about the conservation and regular use of plants. The department believes that when every family plants and uses nutritious plants in their homes, effective control of problems like malnutrition and anemia will be possible.

Women and Child Development Minister Smt. Laxmi Rajwade has said that the fight against malnutrition can be won not only through government schemes, but also through public participation and awareness. By maximizing the availability of locally available nutritious food resources, better nutrition can be provided to children, adolescents, and mothers. With this vision, such innovations are being encouraged in the state.

Sector supervisor, gender expert of Mission Shakti, centre administrator of Sakhi One Stop Centre, Anganwadi workers and officers and employees of Women and Child Development Department were present in the programme.
