Mrs. Savita Sahu became ‘Lakhpati Didi’ through ‘Bihan’ scheme

Many women associated with the “Bihan” National Rural Livelihood Mission in the district are becoming financially self-reliant by engaging in various business activities. Earning annual incomes of over 1 lakh rupees, some are becoming “Lakhpati Didi,” earning them respectable recognition.
Mrs. Savita Sahu, a resident of Sidesar village in Kanker development block, has become an example of self-reliance for rural women. A member of the Gayatri Self Help Group, operated under the Mahanadi Mahila Cluster Organization, Makdikhuna, Savita Sahu has given a new direction to her life by joining the Bihan National Rural Livelihood Mission. Savita Sahu explained that before joining the group, her financial situation was weak. Meeting family expenses, her children’s education, and meeting basic needs was difficult. Despite a desire to start her own business, she lacked financial resources.

Mrs. Savita Sahu explained that upon learning about the Bihan scheme, she joined the Gayatri Self Help Group and became a member. Through regular savings and group meetings, she began receiving financial support. Under the Bihan scheme, she received a revolving fund, incentives, and a community investment of ₹60,000 for livelihood activities. She also learned to transact with the bank. The timely guidance of Bihan’s BPM, AC, and PRP boosted her confidence. The Bihan team also provided crucial support in obtaining a Mudra loan from the bank. Under Bihan’s guidance, Savita Sahu started a mat mill and mushroom production business. This venture generated an annual income of approximately ₹3 lakh in 2024-25, while she is expanding her business by earning ₹121,000 in 2025-26. Today, Savita Sahu has not only strengthened her family’s financial situation but is also inspiring other rural women to become self-reliant through self-employment.
