A historic initiative by the Jail Department in collaboration with the National Defense University

  • Special training program for mental health management of inmates started in the region
  • 30 officers and staff of various jails are undergoing seven days training

Madhya Pradesh Jail Department has started a special training program in mental health management, taking an important initiative towards overall health protection of prisoners. Director General Jail Dr. Under the guidance of Varun Kapoor, this seven-day training is being conducted at the Regional Jail Management and Research Institute, Bhopal, in collaboration with National Defense University (RRU), Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The objective of the training is to make the system of identification, protection, counseling and first aid for mental health of inmates in prisons more effective and systematic.

Director General Jail Dr. Addressing the training program, Kapoor said that the health and safety of inmates is the highest responsibility of the jail department. So far many effective efforts are being made by the department in the field of physical health, while scientific and institutional arrangements are being developed in the field of mental health as well. He said that protection of mental health is essential for rehabilitation of prisoners, improvement of behavior and creation of positive environment in prisons.

Director General Jail Dr. Kapoor said that in this training 30 participants were selected from various jails of the state, including jail guards and paramedical staff. After completion of the training, these officers and staff will be able to effectively conduct the process of identification, scientific maintenance of records, initial consultation, necessary referral and first aid treatment of inmates suffering from mental health problems in their respective jails.

Director General Jail Dr. Kapoor said that this initiative in the field of mental health management would prove to be an important milestone for the jail administration. The Department is also working towards setting up Psycho Social Counseling Centers in various jails of the region, conducting Master Trainer Program in collaboration with National Defense University and entering into Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for long term cooperation in this field.

DIG Mr. Mansharam Patel, Central Jail Superintendent Mr. Manendra Singh Parihar, Administrative Officer Mr. Dinesh Kumar Imle and expert trainers of National Defense University Mr. Geetesh Singh and Mr. Rakesh Singh were present in the training program.
