- Health Team Crosses River Seven Times to Reach Tumeradi
- Sanno Bai Gets a New Lease on Life
Delivering healthcare services to the remote, forested, and inaccessible regions of Bastar has always been a challenge. However, when resolve is strong, neither rivers, dense forests, nor rugged mountains can stand in the way of service. The transformation in the life of 45-year-old Sanno Bai—a resident of Tumeradi, a village situated at the farthest edge of the Orchha block in Narayanpur district—stands as a testament to the compassion of the government’s ‘Chief Minister’s Healthy Bastar Campaign’ and the extraordinary dedication of the healthcare staff.
- A ‘Ray of Hope’ Arrives After Crossing the River Seven Times
The journey to Tumeradi village, located approximately 20 kilometers from the Madpur Sub-Health Centre, is arduous. Surrounded on all sides by dense forests, high hills, and various water bodies, the village requires the health team to cross the same river seven times to reach it. Due to the rugged terrain and challenging geographical conditions, accessing timely healthcare services has always been difficult for the villagers of Tumeradi.
Yet, the Health Department team did not lose heart in their mission of service. Undeterred by the difficult path, the team reached the village and organized a health check-up camp for the residents.
- Leprosy Detected During the Camp

During the health camp organized in the village, 45-year-old Smt. Sanno Bai underwent a medical examination. The check-up revealed that she had been suffering from leprosy for a long time. She had remained untreated until then due to a lack of awareness, financial constraints, and the village’s remote location. The disease had progressed to the point where the fingers of her hands were already being affected. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the health team took immediate action and referred her to the District Hospital in Narayanpur.
- Prompt and Free Treatment at the District Hospital
At the District Hospital in Narayanpur, specialist doctors conducted a thorough examination of Sanno Bai. Following the confirmation of leprosy, she was immediately provided with MDT (Multi-Drug Therapy) medication, and regular treatment commenced. Additionally, Sanno Bai and her family received detailed counseling regarding disease prevention, necessary precautions, and the importance of adhering to the medication regimen.
Timely diagnosis and treatment saved Sanno Bai’s hand from permanent disability. She is currently undergoing regular treatment, and her condition is steadily improving.
- A Commitment to Delivering Healthcare to the Last Person
Sanno Bai’s story is not merely an account of a patient’s recovery; it embodies the spirit of service that brings the state government’s resolve—to extend healthcare facilities to the “last person”—to fruition.
The ‘Chief Minister Swasth Bastar Abhiyan’ (Healthy Bastar Campaign) has demonstrated that government healthcare services are not confined to accessible or urban areas alone. When the resolve to serve is steadfast, even the most arduous paths become surmountable. The health team’s effort—crossing a river seven times and traversing dense forests to reach Tumeradi—has not only given Sanno Bai a new lease on life and renewed hope but has also significantly strengthened the trust of villagers in remote regions toward the healthcare system.
