IIIT-NR Organizes Instructional School on Mathematical Foundation for Data Science and Machine Learning

In a significant step towards strengthening the capabilities of mathematics educators in
emerging technologies, an Instructional School for Teachers (IST) on “Mathematical
Foundation for Data Science and Machine Learning using MATLAB” was successfully
inaugurated at IIIT Naya Raipur, in the gracious presence of Deans, esteemed speakers,
HoDs, faculties and research scholars of different disciplines. The Instructional School will
be conducted from 2 nd June 2025 to 14 th June 2025. It is a highly sought after program as
number of participants registered for this instructional school was approximately 160 out of
which only 40 got selected from all over the country. The program brought together over 40
mathematics and engineering faculty members from across the country, aiming to bridge the
gap between traditional mathematical education and its application in modern data-driven
fields. Sponsored by National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM), the school will
provide an intensive, hands-on learning experience, that combines core mathematical
concepts with real-world applications in Data Science and Machine Learning, using
MATLAB – a leading platform for technical computing.
The key objective of the instructional school is to equip teachers with a strong mathematical
foundation for understanding algorithms in Data Science and Machine Learning; Imparting
practical knowledge of implementing these algorithms using MATLAB; and providing
pedagogical tools to effectively teach these interdisciplinary topics to students. The
curriculum is meticulously designed to cover a blend of theoretical topics such as Linear
Algebra, Probability and Statistics, Optimization Techniques, and Numerical Methods, along
with Applied Machine Learning concepts including Supervised/unsupervised Learning,
Regression, and Classification Algorithms.
Sessions will be conducted by distinguished resource persons Prof. S.K. Safique Ahmed (IIT
Indore), Prof. Nabakumar Jana IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, Dr. Raghav Prasad Parouha (IGNTU
Amarkantak), Dr. Mithilesh Kumar Chaube, Dr. Ramakrishna Bandi, Dr. Chandra Shekhar
Nishad from IIIT Naya Raipur, with specialization in Applied Mathematics, Data Science,
and MATLAB Programming. One of the highlights of the program is a session on
“MATLAB for Machine Learning”, which will demonstrate how powerful built-in tools can
simplify complex Data Analysis tasks, enabling participants to develop Predictive Models
with real datasets. Live coding sessions, interactive lectures, and lab modules will offer
participants an immersive experience.
