On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, MATS School of Fashion Designing and Technology, Raipur, organized a grand Khadi fashion show titled “Charkha” on October 3, 2026. The objective of the event was to honor India’s textile heritage and inspire an appreciation for indigenous (Swadeshi) fabrics among young designers.
The event was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, *Prof. (Dr.) Manoj Dayal, Vice Chancellor of Kushabhau Thakre Journalism and Mass Communication University, Raipur, by lighting the ceremonial lamp before the idol of Goddess Saraswati. The occasion was graced by the presence of MATS University Chancellor **Shri Gajraj Pagariya, Director General **Shri Priyesh Pagariya, Vice Chancellor **Dr. K.P. Yadav, Pro-Vice Chancellor **Dr. Deepika Dhand, Registrar **Shri Gokulananda Panda, Head of Department *Mrs. Parwinder Kaur, along with heads of all academic departments.

The “Charkha” fashion show featured six thematic rounds:
- Indian Style
- Western Style
- Indo-Western Style
- Khadi for Office Wear
- Embroidered Dresses
- Traditional Style Silhouettes
In each round, students showcased handloom-crafted traditional Khadi reimagined into contemporary designs, presenting a blend of vibrant colors, textures, and understated elegance on the runway. A major highlight was the ramp walk by the university’s international students, who wore Khadi attire inspired by the world-famous Kumbh Mela, drawing widespread appreciation from the audience.
The creative designs captivated attendees and demonstrated the versatile appeal of Khadi in modern fashion. Commending the students’ efforts, the Chief Guest remarked that such initiatives motivate youth toward an Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) and sustainable fashion.
Chancellor Shri Gajraj Pagariya extended his best wishes to the students for their future endeavors, encouraging them to progress with perseverance and creativity. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Registrar Shri Gokulananda Panda. Faculty members, students across departments, and distinguished guests attended the program, making the “Charkha” fashion show a striking testament to the fusion of Indian culture, tradition, and modernity.
