- Training Session on ‘The Art of Teaching Mathematics: From Fear to Fascination’ Held at Chhattisgarh Regional Science Center
- Discussions Focused on Explaining Mathematical Concepts in Simple, Engaging, and Experiential Ways
A special training session titled ‘The Art of Teaching Mathematics: From Fear to Fascination’ was organized on Tuesday at the Chhattisgarh Regional Science Center, Raipur. The program aimed to introduce teachers to innovative, activity-based, and creative teaching methods that could make mathematics simple, engaging, and enjoyable for students.
Held under the guidance of Mr. Sonmoni Borah, Principal Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, and Mr. Prashant Kavishwar, Director General of the Chhattisgarh Council of Science and Technology, the program emphasized teaching mathematics by connecting it to daily life, experiences, activities, and creativity, rather than limiting it to textbooks, formulas, and calculations. Experts noted that such teaching methodologies could help foster interest and curiosity about mathematics among students while also developing their logical thinking skills.
The program’s expert, Engineer B. N. Rao—Director of the All India Ramanujan Society and Math Coach at the Ramanujan Talent Search Foundation, Bengaluru—trained teachers in various activity-based and innovative teaching methods. He demonstrated practical examples and activities to explain mathematical concepts simply, highlighting how mathematics can be made accessible and enjoyable by boosting students’ curiosity and active participation in the classroom.

During the session, teachers gained an understanding of mathematical concepts by participating in various activities themselves. These activities demonstrated that even complex-seeming mathematical concepts could be conveyed to students in simple, engaging, and experiential ways. Teachers also learned how to implement these techniques in their respective classrooms. Teachers from four development blocks in Raipur participated in the program in person, while the event was simultaneously broadcast online for teachers across the entire district. Through this initiative, educators from various parts of the district engaged with and benefited from the activity-based mathematics teaching methods shared by the expert.

The interactive session facilitated a dialogue with teachers regarding various aspects of mathematics instruction. Discussions focused on fostering students’ interest in mathematics through small-scale experiments, activities, Q&A sessions, and creative exercises. The primary objective of the program was to equip teachers with effective teaching tools and techniques that enable students to understand and apply mathematical concepts, while also developing their logical and scientific thinking.

Teachers participated in the program with great enthusiasm and active engagement. By taking part in various activities, participants gained an understanding of new techniques and approaches to teaching mathematics. The teachers’ own experiences and suggestions made the session more interactive and valuable. A similar training program will also be organized for B.Ed. students on September 23.
