While the entire nation feels proud to see the tricolor flag flutter from the ramparts of the Red Fort, the “Martyr Veer Narayan Singh Memorial cum Tribal Freedom Fighter Museum,” standing proudly in Nava Raipur Atal Nagar, Chhattisgarh, reminds us of those golden pages of the country’s history that remained neglected for a long time.
Dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on November 1, 2025, on the auspicious occasion of the Silver Jubilee of the Statehood, this magnificent museum is not merely a structure of stone and clay, but a living embodiment of the immortal heroes of Chhattisgarh’s soil who never bowed before the brutal system of the British rule.
The history of Chhattisgarh has always been one of struggle, self-respect, and the protection of water, forests, and land. The sacrifice of the immortal martyr Veer Narayan Singh, who sounded the bell of revolution from the soil of Sonakhan in the great revolution of 1857, still ignites the flame of patriotism in the hearts of the people. Built at a cost of approximately 50 crore rupees, this museum is the first monument in the state specifically dedicated to the valor of tribal heroes. Located on the campus of the Tribal Research and Training Institute, this museum is divided into 14 to 16 magnificent galleries, where over 650 exquisitely beautiful and lifelike sculptures have been installed. According to information provided by Principal Secretary Shri Sonmani Bora, the museum depicts the historic tribal rebellions of the 18th and 19th centuries that shook the foundations of the British Empire. Visitors can experience the heroic tales of the Halba Rebellion, the Surguja Rebellion, the Bhopalpatnam Rebellion, the Paralkot Rebellion, the Tarapur Rebellion, the Lingagiri Rebellion, the Koi Rebellion, the Maria Rebellion, the Muria Rebellion, the Rani Chaurais Rebellion, the Bhumkal Rebellion, and the Sonakhan Rebellion. Two dedicated galleries have been created for the Flag Satyagraha and the Jungle Satyagraha, which played a crucial role in the Indian freedom struggle.
This museum is not just a collection of ancient tales, but also a unique example of cutting-edge technology and in-depth research. Historical events have been transformed through VFX technology, projection work, and digital media, allowing visitors to experience history more than just witnessing it. Each gallery features digital boards, allowing visitors to instantly access complete information about the respective rebellion by scanning a QR code on their mobile phone or using a monitor and microphone. Guides are also available to guide visitors. The museum has excellent facilities for tourists like pure drinking water, parking, CCTV security, first aid centre and wheelchairs, along with a special child care room for pregnant women.Since its inauguration, the museum has become a major center of inspiration and knowledge for tourists, researchers, and students from India and abroad. During holidays, it attracts four to five thousand visitors daily, and on normal days, one to two thousand. In just ten months, more than 250,000 people have visited it. Supreme Court Chief Justice Surya Kant, international athlete Mary Kom, administrative and police officers from various states, army personnel, and a multitude of foreign tourists have visited and appreciated Chhattisgarh’s rich heritage. The museum has also brought new employment opportunities to local residents. Built under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai, the continuous guidance of Departmental Minister Ramvichar Netam, and the administrative leadership of Principal Secretary Sonmani Bora, this memorial will continue to impart to future generations the message that courage to fight injustice is the greatest strength. The sacrifice of these immortal fighters of Chhattisgarh will always inspire us to protect the integrity and self-respect of our nation.
