Youth to Participate in Biodiversity Conservation through ‘Citizen Science’

An awareness and training program was organized in the Jashpur Forest Division under the ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’ to engage youth, local communities, and forest staff in climate change and biodiversity conservation. Held under the guidance of Forest and Climate Change Minister Shri Kedar Kashyap, the program involved youth in ‘Citizen Science’ and provided practical training on the scientific documentation and conservation of local biodiversity.

Subject experts Dr. Anil Srivastava from the Forest Headquarters in Raipur and Shri Yamlesh Nishad, a Research Associate at the College of Agriculture, Ambikapur, explained the causes of climate change and its impact on the environment and biodiversity. They briefed participants on various aspects of effective forest ecosystem management and biodiversity conservation amidst changing climatic conditions.

  • Training on Biodiversity Documentation through the ‘Yuvan’ Initiative

Through the ‘Yuvan’ initiative of the Foundation for Ecological Security (Raipur), youth were introduced to the processes of scientific observation and documentation of local biodiversity. Volunteers from ‘Mera Yuva Bharat’, Jashpur, also participated in the event. During the training, information was shared regarding the ecological significance of birds, butterflies, and reptiles, as well as their conservation. Through nature walks and bird watching, participants gained practical experience in identifying local flora and fauna, conducting field observations, and documenting these species. The program was attended by Jashpur Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Shri Shashi Kumar, along with Forest Department officials and staff, subject experts, and representatives from various organizations.
