- Women Farmers of Dhamtari Turn Gattasilli FPC into a Model of Rural Entrepreneurship
Rural economies are strengthened not merely by the crops grown in fields, but by the collective decisions of farmers, an understanding of the market, and the ability to secure fair prices for their produce. The five-year journey of the Gattasilli Farmer Producer Company (FPC) in the Nagri development block of Dhamtari district has emerged as a landmark example of rural entrepreneurship and women’s leadership. Here, farmers—and specifically women farmers—have come together to not only establish a business platform but also pave a new path for ‘farmer-owned enterprises.’
- A Collective Resolve Echoed by 550 Shareholders
Around 550 shareholders—both men and women—participated in the FPC’s Annual General Meeting held in the Nagri development block as part of the ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’ (Service Pledge Campaign). Members representing all five Cluster Level Federations (CLFs) of Nagri engaged in detailed discussions regarding the company’s progress over the past five years, its financial accounts, dividend distribution, and future plans.
- A Journey of Trust Born from Challenges
In the initial stages, bringing small and marginal farmers—particularly women—onto a single platform and instilling in them a sense of institutional ownership posed a significant challenge. Members of the Board of Directors (BoDs) shared their experiences, noting that through continuous dialogue and a transparent operational style, initial skepticism gradually transformed into trust. Today, women farmers are not merely beneficiaries of schemes but are active drivers of the decision-making process and the collective business enterprise.
- Collective Market Access and Branding: From Farm to Market
Emphasis is being placed on integrating farmers into processing and marketing activities, rather than limiting their role to the production of raw materials alone. Gattasilli FPC is placing special emphasis on the value addition of local produce. It is working to connect farmers directly to the market, thereby breaking the stranglehold of middlemen. Under this initiative, organized marketing for aromatic paddy and the renowned ‘Nagri Dubraj’ rice variety is being ensured. Simultaneously, new and lucrative market opportunities are being explored for other agricultural products—including Non-Timber Forest Produce (NTFP)—to ensure farmers receive fair remuneration for their hard work.
- Women Take the Lead
The active participation of women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and Cluster Level Federations (CLFs) has steered this model in a new direction. The strong presence of rural women on the Board of Directors sends a powerful message: they are not confined merely to farming activities but are also at the forefront of business decision-making and entrepreneurship. This has not only boosted family incomes but also enhanced the social standing and respect accorded to women.
- A Confluence of Agriculture, Culture, and Community Consciousness
The Annual General Meeting went beyond a mere discussion of business figures; it also offered a glimpse into Nagri’s rich agricultural culture. Women and children from local CLFs presented cultural performances that artistically highlighted why Chhattisgarh is known as the “Rice Bowl of India” and underscored the importance of regenerative agricultural practices.
- Digital Marketing and Branding
This successful five-year journey opens up new avenues for Gattasilli FPC. Moving forward, the organization will focus on improving product quality, branding, leveraging digital platforms, and establishing an extensive market network.
From collectivism to ownership, from ownership to self-confidence, and from self-confidence to self-reliance—the story of Gattasilli FPC proves that when the reins of development are in the hands of the people, the resulting change is both sustainable and inspiring.
