- Recommendation to replace formal names with names associated with belonging and positivity; reports sought from districts by September 21
Dr. Varnika Sharma, Chairperson of the Chhattisgarh State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, has taken an important initiative to make the identity of the state’s male and female protection homes and child protection homes more positive and child-friendly. She has recommended replacing the current formal and institutional names of these institutions with names that foster a sense of belonging, self-respect, security, and positive thinking in children.
Dr. Varnika Sharma has sent a letter to the Principal Secretary of the Women and Child Development Department, Chhattisgarh Government, requesting necessary action in this regard. She has suggested that the names of child protection institutions should not be limited to administrative identification, but should also reflect sensitivity and dignity towards children.
Citing positive and dignified names such as “Palash” and “Parisha” used for child protection institutions in Jammu, the Commission recommended similar names for Chhattisgarh. The Commission believes that the name of an institution impacts the psyche and social identity of the children living there. Therefore, the name should be such that it fosters a sense of self-confidence and respect in children, rather than a sense of inferiority.
- Names will be associated with local culture and nature
Chairperson Dr. Varnika Sharma has suggested prioritizing positive and inspiring names related to local language, culture, nature, folk traditions, and regional identity during district naming. This will connect the institutions’ identities with the local environment and make them more relatable to children.
The Commission also recommends seeking input from children, caregivers, and other stakeholders when deciding on new names. This will help children connect with the process of establishing their institution’s new identity and develop a sense of belonging.
The Commission has issued necessary guidelines to the Women and Child Development Department and requested them to obtain the list of proposed names of child protection institutions from the districts and inform the Commission in writing about the action taken in this regard by September 21.
