A new dawn for Abujhmad: When the women of Narayanpur emerged from the jungles and became an example of self-reliance.

A new wave of change is now blowing through the remote and inaccessible Abujhmad forests of Bastar. Once confined to the Naxalite shadows and the confines of their homes, the rural women of the Narayanpur and Orchha development blocks are now writing a new chapter of self-reliance through their courage and hard work. A visionary initiative by the Forest Department has not only given wings to these women’s dreams but also, through financial support through the Revolving Fund, has helped them emerge as successful entrepreneurs.

  • Women standing on their own feet by joining livelihood activities

In 2026-27, as per the government’s mandate, 10 women self-help groups in the area were provided loans from a revolving fund of ₹37 lakh. This financial assistance breathed new life into the rural economy. Women associated with groups like Jai Bihan, Jagdamba, Maa Lakshmi, Maa Shitala, Maa Danteshwari, Maa Durga, Maa Saraswati, Maa Ambe, and Jai Wala Karyo are now self-reliant by engaging in various livelihood activities. Some are making plates and bowls from tamarind and mahul leaves collected from the forests, while others are processing raw flower brooms and bringing them to market. Through the successful operation of spice manufacturing, bakeries, canteens, and grocery stores under home industries, these women have proven that, given the opportunity, they can excel in any field.

  • Women of Abujhmad able to provide better education and good health facilities to children

The most beautiful aspect of this transformation is the prosperity these families have brought. Regular income from self-employment has not only instilled self-confidence in the women, but they are now able to provide their children with better education and adequate healthcare. These women of Abujhmad, becoming economically strong by joining mainstream society, have become an inspiring example of women’s empowerment and rural development for the entire state of Chhattisgarh.
