- Shri Ramesh Chandra Mahapatra has assumed the office of Director (Technical-Operations) at South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL). He has also been entrusted with the additional charge of Director (Technical)-Project & Planning.
On the occasion of his assuming office, various Heads of Departments (HoDs), officers, and employees of SECL extended their congratulations and best wishes to Shri Mahapatra. After taking charge, he held a review meeting with the HoDs and Area General Managers. The meeting focused on reviewing the company’s key operational priorities, production-related activities, and ongoing works across various areas.
- Over Three Decades of Experience in the Mining Sector
Shri Ramesh Chandra Mahapatra possesses extensive experience spanning more than three decades in the mining sector. Prior to assuming the role of Director (Technical) at SECL, he served as the General Manager of the Jhanjra Area at Eastern Coalfields Limited. He holds vast experience in the fields of mining operations, project management, and strategic leadership.
An alumnus of IIT-BHU, Shri Mahapatra obtained his degree in Mining Engineering in 1990. He also holds an MBA in Human Resource Management and is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India).
- Career Began at SECL

Shri Mahapatra began his career at the Surakachhar Colliery in the Korba Area of SECL. Throughout his long career, he has held various key positions, including Colliery Manager, Project Officer, Additional General Manager, and General Manager.
He has successfully led several major underground and open-cast mining projects for Coal India. He has made significant contributions towards increasing production, adopting modern mining technologies, resolving complex issues related to land and rehabilitation, and establishing strong coordination with local communities.
- Representing the Indian Coal Sector on International Platforms
Shri Mahapatra has also represented the Indian coal sector at the international level. These include the African Mining Indaba held in Cape Town, South Africa, and discussions regarding industrial cooperation in the Czech Republic.
With his extensive operational experience, technical expertise, and leadership capabilities, Mr. Mahapatra’s new role is expected to further accelerate SECL’s operations, production, technical upgrades, and project implementation.
