Due to the promptness, high level medical management and coordinated teamwork of the doctors of Sant Baba Guru Ghasidas Ji Smriti Government Hospital, Raigarh, affiliated to Late Shri Lakhiram Aggarwal Smriti Government Medical College, a 23-year-old first-time pregnant woman was successfully saved from a very serious condition of peripartum cardiac arrest.

The patient, a 23-year-old woman who was pregnant for the first time, was suffering from pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure during pregnancy). She was brought to the Medical College Emergency Department from a private hospital in a critical condition on February 2, 2026, at approximately 12 noon, with extremely high blood pressure and severe shortness of breath. Examination by the doctor confirmed pulmonary edema (fluid accumulation in the lungs), a life-threatening condition. Given the severity of the condition, an emergency caesarean section (LSCS) was immediately decided upon. During treatment, the patient suddenly suffered a peripartum cardiac arrest.

Dr. A.M. Lakra (Head of the Department of Anesthesia) stated that our medical team immediately recognized the situation and initiated high-quality CPR. Through swift and coordinated efforts, the patient’s heart was restored. The patient was then placed on ventilator support in the ICU, where intensive monitoring and systematic post-cardiac arrest care were provided.

After approximately three days on ventilator support, the patient’s condition steadily improved. The ventilator was gradually removed under the close supervision of specialist physicians, and finally, on February 12, 2026, the patient was shifted from the ICU to the ward. Today, the patient was successfully treated and discharged.

This complex and life-saving procedure was conducted by Dr. Anand Masih Lakra, Head of the Department of Anaesthesia, along with Dr. T.K. Sahu, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Chandrabhanu Pankra, Dr. Ashok Singh Sidar, Dr. Lesh Patel, Dr. Anish, Dr. Laxmi Yadav, Dr. Amit Bhoi, Dr. Subhash Raj and the Operation Theatre (OT) staff who provided excellent support in this challenging situation.

Hospital Superintendent Dr. M.K. Minj said that this success was the result of early recognition, high-quality CPR, quick decisions, and the efforts of a multi-disciplinary coordinated team. This incident demonstrates that if expert medical care is available in high-risk pregnancies, lives can be saved even in the most critical situations.
