- Self-help groups provided support, skills transformed into employment and recognition
Once struggling to meet her family’s needs, Mrs. Vishakha Mandal is now, through her skills and self-confidence, not only financially independent but also an inspiration to many women in her village. Her humble beginnings, with a needle and thread, have become a success story that paints a new picture of rural women’s empowerment.
Like many rural women, Mrs. Vishakha Mandal, a resident of Radha Krishna Nagar village in Balrampur district, was struggling with responsibilities and limited resources. Her family’s income was limited, and she had many concerns about the future. At this time, joining the Jagriti Mahila Self Help Group under the National Rural Livelihood Mission proved to be a turning point in her life.
A loan of 30,000 rupees from the Community Investment Fund, obtained through the group, gave wings to her dreams. With this money, she purchased a sewing machine and necessary materials and opened a small ladies tailor shop at Savani Mod, Maharajganj. The beginning wasn’t easy, but with her skill, hard work, and the trust of her customers, Mrs. Vishakha Mandal gradually carved out a niche for herself.
Over the past two and a half years, her shop has become a trusted name among the women of the area. Her busy schedule during festivals and wedding season is proof that quality and dedication always pave the way for success. On occasions like Diwali and Dussehra, her daily income reaches three thousand rupees. Today, her annual income is approximately one and a half lakh rupees, and she is recognized as “Lakhpati Didi.”
Mrs. Vishakha Mandal says that the self-help group not only provided her with financial support but also gave her confidence. While she previously relied on others for family needs, today she contributes significantly to the household’s financial responsibilities. The smiles and confidence on her face prove that rural women can achieve success in any field, given the opportunity.
The most beautiful aspect of her success is that she is now herself inspiring other women to join self-help groups and take up self-employment.
