To address the challenge of potential scanty and irregular rainfall due to climate change and ‘Super El Niño’, the Dhamtari Agriculture Department organized an important district-level training program on Friday. Organized under the Extension Reforms ‘ATMA’ scheme, this special session educated farmers across the district about modern techniques, scientific farming, and crop insurance, so they could disseminate this knowledge to every village.

During the training, agricultural scientists and department officials elaborated on several important strategies for protecting crops in times of low rainfall. Farmer friends were encouraged to visit their areas and raise awareness among farmers in a timely manner.
Scientists advised to give priority to short duration rice varieties, pulses and oilseed crops instead of traditional crops to deal with adverse weather conditions. Emphasis was laid on adopting scientific ‘Direct Seeded Rice’ technique to save water. Similarly, practical measures were suggested for proper use of available water in the fields, balanced nutrition management and maintaining soil moisture for a long time. - Crop insurance will become a safety shield for farmers
A special session was held on the “Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana” to provide financial security to farmers against the risks of natural disasters and drought. The district manager of the scheme provided detailed information on the insurance process, eligibility, and deadlines for notified crops such as paddy, urad, mung, kodo, kutki, and ragi. He appealed to farmers to ensure crop insurance for as many farmers as possible before the deadline to compensate for any losses.
- The main goal is to increase production and income
At the conclusion of the program, officials called on the farmer friends to effectively disseminate the information on modern agricultural techniques and government schemes learned during this training at the rural level. Only when farmers cultivate in accordance with scientific advice will the district’s agricultural production and farmers’ income remain secure even in adverse weather.
