A high-level committee was formed to draft and implement a Uniform Civil Code in Chhattisgarh. Its first meeting was held today at the Ministry’s Mahanadi Bhawan. The committee was chaired by retired Justice Mrs. Ranjana Prakash Desai. Retired IAS officers Mr. Shatrughan Singh and Mr. M.K. Raut, senior advocate Mr. Mohan Pawar, and retired principal Mrs. Jyoti Rani Singh were its members.
The committee will study the family legal systems currently in place in the state and seek suggestions from citizens, social organizations, legal experts, and other stakeholders. The committee unanimously decided that the Uniform Civil Code provisions implemented in other states will also be examined soon. Public dialogue will be organized to gather the views of all sections and communities of society. It was also decided that the primary objective when obtaining feedback on the legal system to be implemented in the state will be to safeguard and protect the rights of women and children.
