- Important information on breastfeeding and nutrition given to mothers and pregnant women during World Breastfeeding Week
An awareness program was organized at the Cultural Hall in Bijapur as part of World Breastfeeding Week, aimed at improving mother and child health and preventing malnutrition. The Women and Child Development Department and the Health Department jointly organized this program under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign. Approximately 280 mothers and pregnant women from various areas of the district participated.
- Breastfeeding in the first hour of birth is essential.
During the program, Bijapur’s BMO, Dr. Chelapati Rao, and Dr. Patel, informed mothers about the importance of breastfeeding. They explained that the baby should be fed the mother’s first thick, yellow milk (colostrum) within the first hour of birth. This boosts the baby’s immunity and protects it from many infections. They also emphasized that babies should be fed exclusively breast milk for six months from birth. During this period, there is no need to introduce water, gruel, or other foods. Complementary foods can be introduced after six months, but breastfeeding should be continued. Experts stated that breastfeeding is
- beneficial for both mother and child, and
contributes to the baby’s physical and mental development. This reduces the risk of infection and keeps the baby healthy. Breastfeeding is also beneficial for the mother in improving her health after delivery. Mothers were given information on proper breastfeeding and encouraged to seek advice from health workers when needed.
- Emphasis on a nutritious diet:

Pregnant and lactating mothers were advised to eat a balanced and nutritious diet. Emphasis was placed on including green leafy vegetables, pulses, seasonal fruits, milk, and other nutritious foods in their diets. They were also advised to regularly take iron and folic acid tablets as advised by doctors.
- Mothers asked questions and shared experiences:
During the program, mothers asked many questions related to breastfeeding and shared their experiences. A pregnant woman said that she now understands that mother’s milk is the strongest foundation for a child’s healthy future, and this message should reach every family.
- Efforts towards a healthy childhood and safe motherhood
This program, organized as part of World Breastfeeding Week, is an important initiative towards reducing infant mortality, preventing malnutrition, and promoting safe motherhood. The aim of the Women and Child Development Department and the Health Department is to provide correct information related to breastfeeding and nutrition to every mother in the district, so that every child can get better nutrition and a healthy future right from the beginning of life.
