In a monumental step toward environmental conservation and climate resilience, Chhattisgarh is witnessing a renewed wave of ecological action under the visionary leadership of the Minister for Forest and Climate Change, Shri Kedar Kashyap. Driven by his strategic directives, the Chhattisgarh State Wetland Authority, in seamless collaboration with the Bilaspur Forest Division, successfully spearheaded a massive “Green Drive” on Thursday at the state’s prestigious Ramsar Site, the Kopra Reservoir.
This proactive departmental initiative marks a significant milestone in the state’s environmental roadmap. Aimed at expanding the lush green cover surrounding the critical reservoir, the drive is meticulously designed to conserve local biodiversity. By focusing on planting fruit-bearing saplings, the forest department is laying the foundation for a safe, thriving, and highly conducive natural habitat that will naturally sustain both migratory and resident bird populations for generations to come.
Showcasing the department’s exceptional ability to mobilize grassroots support, the plantation drive witnessed an inspiring turnout. Sarpanchs from the adjacent villages of Belmundi and Saida, alongside enthusiastic local villagers and students from the Government Middle School in Kopra, actively joined hands with forest officials. The department’s technical foresight in exclusively selecting fruit-bearing trees has been widely praised. This strategic ecological choice ensures a sustainable, accessible, and natural food web for the region’s vibrant avian and wildlife ecosystems, directly amplifying the area’s long-term environmental health.
The atmosphere at the Kopra Reservoir was one of shared purpose and immense environmental pride. Guided by the department’s unwavering commitment to wetland enhancement, the attending public representatives, students, and local communities took a unified, formal pledge. Together, they vowed to meticulously protect and nurture the newly planted saplings, guaranteeing the long-term success of the Minister’s green vision.
Capitalizing on the overwhelming community enthusiasm and the resounding success of the event, the department has proactively resolved to implement a phased expansion of the “Green Drive.” This vital initiative will soon be extended to other villages dotting the periphery of the Kopra Reservoir. This forward-thinking strategy aims to weave a robust, continuous green landscape around the internationally recognized Ramsar site. Through continuous community engagement and steadfast departmental leadership, this landmark measure is set to play a pivotal role in mitigating climate change impacts and mastering sustainable wetland management. Amplifying Minister Kashyap’s call to action, the Chhattisgarh State Wetland Authority has warmly appealed to all citizens to embrace this transformative campaign and actively contribute to a greener, more resilient Chhattisgarh.
