Cleanliness is not only the foundation of a healthy life, but it is also proving to be a powerful means of employment and self-reliance in rural areas. Mrs. Tarani Bai, a resident of Buchuakapa, a dependent village of Gram Panchayat Chhatauna in the Mungeli development block of Mungeli district in Chhattisgarh state, has demonstrated this. She has made the community sanitation complex with shops constructed in the village under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural) her primary source of livelihood.
- “Found a livelihood in the village itself.”
Tarani Bai successfully operates a grocery, general store, and sewing center within this sanitation complex. Previously, she felt uncomfortable leaving the village for employment, but now, finding employment within the village is making her self-reliant.
- “An income of 5,000 to 6,000 rupees per month”
Through this center, she earns approximately 5,000 to 6,000 rupees per month. This has given her the opportunity to contribute financially to her family’s livelihood and become self-reliant.
- ‘Double responsibility of maintenance’
Along with running her job, Tarani Bai is also fulfilling the responsibility of regular operation, cleanliness and maintenance of this community sanitation complex with full dedication.
