Mornings used to begin with the search for water. Village women would travel long distances carrying pots on their heads to fetch water. This problem became even more severe during the summer. But today, in Sevaiyakala village, under the Teka Gram Panchayat of Pithora Block, Mahasamund district, every household in the village has access to clean drinking water through taps, making water concerns a thing of the past.
Under the ambitious Jal Jeevan Mission (Har Ghar Jal) scheme of the Central Government and the Chhattisgarh Government, Sevaiyakala achieved the goal of providing water to every household on June 25, 2026. All families in the village are regularly provided with safe drinking water through taps. The scheme was effectively implemented under the leadership of the Gram Panchayat Sarpanch, Mrs. Kamli Basant, and Secretary, Mrs. Hemlata Sahu. Under the scheme, the village’s water supply system was developed at a cost of approximately ₹81.52 lakh. A 40-kilolitre high-rise water tank was constructed, and a 3,825-meter pipeline was laid, providing tap connections to 185 households. The village’s primary school and Anganwadi center have also been connected to this facility, providing children with easy access to clean drinking water.
To ensure long-term smooth water supply, a Village Water and Sanitation Committee has been formed in the village. The committee’s bank account is maintained, and a monthly water tax of 60 rupees is collected from each family for maintenance. This will ensure uninterrupted water supply in the future. Mr. Mithilesh Basant has been assigned the responsibility of water supply as a pump operator. He ensures water supply at scheduled times every morning and evening, ensuring regular water supply to every household.
Mrs. Devika Sahu, a resident of the village, explains that previously, they had to travel long distances to fetch water, often waiting for hours in the summer. Now, clean water is available from their home taps. This saves time, makes childcare and other household chores easier. Most importantly, access to clean water has improved the family’s health.
