Village Kachhardih overcomes long-standing water crisis with Jal Jeevan Mission

Kachhardih, a village situated 70 km from the Mahasamund district headquarters, had been grappling with drinking water issues for years. Although the village had access to four hand pumps and two power pumps, these sources often ran dry in the summer, leading to severe water shortages. Many families lacked private water arrangements, forcing them to fetch water from ponds and wells. This situation placed a heavy burden on women and children, who had to travel long distances for water, negatively impacting their education and health. Schools and Anganwadi centers also suffered from inadequate drinking water facilities, further hindering children’s studies.

A turning point for Kachhardih came when a Gram Sabha was organized under the Jal Jeevan Mission, raising awareness among villagers about the scheme’s objectives and benefits. The Sangam Seva Samiti was entrusted with implementation responsibilities. A ‘Gram Jal Swachhata Samiti’ was formed, ensuring 50 per cent women participation, with the Gram Sarpanch appointed as chairperson and the Panchayat Secretary serving as secretary.

Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, a 40-kilolitre water tank was constructed at a cost of Rs 66.09 lakh. Approximately 635 meters of pipeline was laid, enabling tap water supply to every household. A water testing committee was established to monitor water quality, with Mitanin and Anganwadi workers trained to regularly test the water using field test kits.

Today, every household in Kachhardih receives water, alleviating the struggle for this vital resource. Villagers have also started using toilets regularly, reducing disposal problems. The availability of clean drinking water has led to a decline in waterborne diseases. Increased awareness of water resources has empowered villagers to manage them more effectively. A water tax of Rs 50 is collected from each family to ensure the scheme’s operation and maintenance. Besides, a pump operator, Umendra Kumar Dhruv, has been appointed to manage the water supply in the mornings and evenings. On October 5, Kachhardih received the ‘Har Ghar Jal’ certification in the district.

The Jal Jeevan Mission has provided the village with clean water and encouraged greater self-reliance among its residents. The residents of Kachhardih are now addressing their challenges through collective efforts.
