‘Gyanbharatam’ manuscript survey campaign gains momentum in Chhattisgarh, thousands of heritage documents are being preserved

  • Committees formed in 26 districts, survey of over 4,000 manuscripts completed; cultural heritage will be protected through digital preservation.

The “Gyan Bharatam National Manuscript Survey Campaign,” launched by the central government, is rapidly gaining momentum in Chhattisgarh. This important initiative aims to survey the ancient and historical manuscripts available in the state, secure them, preserve them, and digitally transmit them to future generations.

Chhattisgarh is actively participating in this nationwide campaign, which began in March 2026. Of the 33 districts in the state, district-level committees have been formed and nodal officers appointed in 26 districts, while the process is ongoing in the remaining seven districts.
Under the campaign, district-level committee meetings are being held to identify individuals and organizations collecting manuscripts. Additionally, work at the grassroots level is being strengthened by appointing village and area-wise surveyors.

The Department of Culture, which is the nodal department for this campaign, in collaboration with the regional coordinators of Gyan Bharatam, is providing special training to the trainers at the district level, so that the survey work can be completed with quality and accuracy.

Under the Gyan Bharatam campaign, the Government of India initially provided information on 148 manuscripts in Chhattisgarh. Subsequently, the survey work has made significant progress. Currently, the survey work has begun in six districts of the state, and so far, 4,191 manuscripts have been successfully surveyed through the Gyan Bharatam app.

This campaign is not only a big step towards preserving the rich cultural heritage of the state, but is also becoming a powerful medium to preserve this invaluable treasure of knowledge in digital form for the future generations.
