The boat of smiles becomes the rudder of self-reliance

  • Women wrote a new chapter of success on the waves of Pilkha Dam.

Rural women, once confined to their household responsibilities, are now exemplifying self-reliance, becoming an inspiration for the entire state. Boats sailing on the tranquil waters of Pilkha Dam in Pahargaon, Surajpur district, no longer merely offer tourists a ride but also tell the story of women’s struggle, courage, and success.
This is the story of the Muskaan Women’s Self-Help Group, which, despite limited resources, forged a new path to self-reliance by using their courage as a rudder. Under the leadership of the group’s president, Mrs. Sunita Singh, and secretary, Mrs. Yashoda Das, 10 women entered the tourism sector and established their identity by launching boating activities.
The beginning was not easy. They faced a lack of resources, a lack of technical knowledge, and numerous operational challenges. But instead of giving up, these women resolved to turn challenges into opportunities. They took on the responsibility of boating operations, safety management, and tourist amenities themselves, gradually turning their efforts into success.

Today, tourists visiting Pilkha Dam enthusiastically enjoy boating. The group has earned ₹74,000 through this initiative so far. This has not only strengthened the women’s economic status but also significantly increased their self-confidence and social respect.
Members of the group say they never imagined operating tourism activities and creating self-employment. Today, they are not only increasing their family income but also inspiring other women to become self-reliant.
The success of the Muskan Women’s Self-Help Group demonstrates that given opportunity and confidence, rural women can reach new heights in any field. This boat, sailing on the waves of Pilkha Dam, is no longer just a means of tourism but has become a powerful symbol of women’s empowerment, entrepreneurship, and a self-reliant India.
