Another record of the Heart-Chest and Vascular Surgery Department of Medical College

  • 9 lung lobectomy surgeries performed in 20 days, totaling 13 lung lobectomy surgeries in two months.
  • The surgery also included a lung lobectomy on a 15-year-old boy who had an Aspergilloma virus fungus infection in the upper lobe of his left lung.
  • The youngest patient to ever undergo lung lobectomy surgery
  • The age of the patients involved in this operation ranges from 15 years to 70 years.

The Department of Heart, Chest, and Vascular Surgery at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital, Raipur, affiliated with Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Hospital, has set a new record in the field of complex lung surgery, successfully performing nine lobectomies (surgeries to remove an infected part of the lung) in just 20 days, and a total of 13 in the last two months. These two emergency surgeries were performed on patients who were coughing up excessive bleeding (hemoptysis). These complex surgeries, performed with the help of modern technology and advanced lung staplers, have not only proven the institute’s expertise but have also established Ambedkar Hospital as a leading institute in the field of lung surgery in Chhattisgarh.

According to Dr. Krishnakant Sahu, Head of the Department of Heart, Chest, and Vascular Surgery, lung lobectomy surgery involves removing a portion of the patient’s damaged lung. This surgery is extremely complex. This surgery is performed at this institute using state-of-the-art technology, including advanced lung staplers, which greatly reduces the risk of future complications from this surgery, such as bronchopleural fistula. Performing so many lobectomy surgeries (lung lobectomy surgery) in such a short time, compared to any other private or government institution in Chhattisgarh, is a record for this institute and a matter of pride for Chhattisgarh.

The leading cause of lobectomy (lung) surgery in Chhattisgarh is aspergilloma and bronchiectasis. Aspergilloma is caused by the fungus Aspergillus niger. This infection occurs in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis or those with severely weakened immunity.

Aspergilloma generally occurs most in the upper lobe of the right lung, because here the TB bacteria and Aspergilloma fungus get a very good environment. Bronchiectasis is also the most common disease occurring after TB infection of the lungs, in which small cavities are formed inside the lungs and after infection in these, the patients bleed while coughing. Vascular malformation and lung abscess, due to the formation of a large cavity in the lung, is the biggest cause of bleeding in cough (Hemoptysis).

Vascular malformations and lung cancer are also major causes of blood in sputum. In cases where lung cancer is in its early stages, a lobectomy operation can provide complete relief.

The Heart, Chest and Vascular Surgery Department performs the maximum number of lung surgeries in the entire Chhattisgarh, which mainly include lung decortication surgery, lobectomy, segmentectomy and pneumonectomy, in which one side of the right or left lung is completely removed, etc.

Typically, this institute performs 15 to 20 lobectomy surgeries annually. Furthermore, patients come here for lung surgery not only from Chhattisgarh but also from neighboring states such as Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. This is a matter of pride for this institute.

All these operations are performed free of charge under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana (Ayushman Bharat Yojana). We still have a few patients waiting for lobectomy surgery in our department.

  • What is lobectomy surgery?

Our body has two lobes of lungs, called the right and left lungs. The left lung is made up of two lobes, called the upper lobe and the lower lobe. Similarly, the right lung has three lobes: the upper lobe, the middle lobe, and the lower lobe.

If any lung disease like Aspergilloma, Bronchiectasis or Lung Tumour is limited to one part or lobe, then in that case that part is removed through surgery, which is called Lobectomy in medical language. In this, by making an incision in the right or left chest, the infected lung is separated from other parts and with the help of special technique and lung stapler, the infected lobe is removed. By using modern staplers, the complications occurring after lung surgery like Bronchopleural Fistula are reduced to a great extent. Generally, patients are discharged after 6-8 days.
