The resolution echoed in the good governance camps: “Neither will we do child marriage nor will we allow it to happen.”

  • Women and Child Development Department launched an intensive awareness campaign
  • Pledge to make Bijapur ‘child marriage free’

The district administration, the Women and Child Development Department, and the Police Department are jointly running a comprehensive campaign to make Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh free of child marriage. Under this campaign, 25 village panchayats have been declared child marriage-free so far. Under the Collector’s leadership, the goal is to achieve complete child marriage-free status by 2028-29 through awareness campaigns, pledges, and strict monitoring under the Child Marriage Prohibition Act 2006.

Under the direction of Collector Vishwadeep, the Women and Child Development Department is conducting a comprehensive public awareness program at good governance camps in Bijapur district as part of the “Child Marriage Free Chhattisgarh” campaign. The aim of this initiative is to make every segment of society aware of the adverse effects of child marriage and the stringent legal provisions associated with it.

  • Mass resolution and oath taking

During the camps, villagers, women, youth, and parents demonstrated solidarity against the evil practice of child marriage. Participants collectively resolved to not only protect their families from this evil practice but also to prevent it from occurring in society. Villagers also promised to immediately report any potential child marriage to the administration. A large-scale signature campaign is also underway to ensure active participation within the community.

Special emphasis on education and health

Department officials explained to those present at the camps that early marriage is a major obstacle to the development of girls. Marriage deprives daughters of education, limiting their future opportunities. Early pregnancy increases the risk of maternal and infant mortality. People were also made aware of the penalties and legal action under the Child Marriage Prohibition Act.

Helpline number for assistance

In addition to raising awareness, the administration has also shared important contact information for quick assistance. Assistance can be sought at the Child Helpline 1098 (for child safety) and the Women’s Helpline 181 (for women’s assistance).

  • Bijapur will change with public participation

The large crowds and enthusiasm at the Good Governance Camps indicate that Bijapur is now poised for a major social transformation. The district administration and the Women and Child Development Department have a shared goal of completely eradicating child marriage from the district through public participation.
